Excuse to drink

When I actually analysed it, myself justifying why I need a drink, it just contradicted all reasons.

EXCUSES
I'm sad, I need to drown my sorrows
I'm happy, lets celebrate with a drink
I'm bored, let's have a drink
I'm having so much fun, let's enhance it with a drink
I'm tired I need a drink
I'm so relaxed, let have a drink
I've got a new job, lets celebrate with a drink
I've lost my job, I need a drink.
I've been working long hours, I need a drink
I'm on holiday away from work and home, let me drink

and the list goes on and one, when I take a step back, I realise that they were all excuses for a drink, what ever the reason, I thought the drink was the solution. Drink was at the centre of my life and drink was the reason for all bad in my life. All the above is so much better without the problem drink!

I guess that this was the addiction fooling me in to drinking, as I was obviously to smart to become a alcoholic right?

You're definitely on to something! Life will be so much better overall without the booze.

The bottom line is... you can justify ANYTHING if you try hard enough!

DENIAL is the addict's most powerful tool to continue.

Bingo, MiniBK. For me, the easiest time to justify it is when I'm feeling celebratory. Of course, the natural outcome of this mode of thinking is that everything then becomes a cause for celebration -- even the simplest victories!

Reason to drink = alcoholic delusion that these excuses are valid and not insane thinking.

I drank because the sky is blue. Or gray. Or cloudy.

You forgot the weather, it is hot and sunny great time to drink, cold and rainy great time to drink, snowy=great time to drink. That is the one I used if there were no other issues to promote it. There is always an excuse and as you said all are contradictory. Great post!!

I drank because I was awake.

My brain wiring mistakenly perceives the WANT to drink as a NEED to drink. Essentially highjacking my cogent thinking.

I drank because my favorite team won.
I drank because my favorite team lost.
I drank because there was tie.
I drank because rain washed the match, away.
I drank because there was a tight match coming up.
I drank because there was no match and it was boring..

Now, why did it take so long for me to realize that I drank and just drank. No matter what was the reason....

Have you thought about changing your team? ..... lol

I was the same -> The games on, let me drink, by the time the game finished I was confused and not quite sure what happened during the middle part of the game. I enjoy it so much more now sober!

my friends father would say to us, "everytime someone sneezes its an excuse for you guys to drink", immediately followed by, "you know if you guys keep drinking like that one day you are going to try to stop and you wont be able to" he was right.

I would say he was kind of right, drinking like that can lead to it seeming like you are not able to stop. It can lead to it being difficult to stop, but I think he was wrong to say to say not able to. I believe we are all 'able' to, as soon as I let myself see that I was able to , I did stop. I just had to realize that I was able to, even if it didn't seem/feel like I was.

I think what you describe here is the classic cognitive dissonance plot that we all experience with addictions. "Reason" in this context = rationalizations developed by us and projected onto all those possible external situations, to give ourselves permission to drink. The dissonance is what we perceive as a contradiction between reason and desires, and resolve it using these justifications and many others.
