I've not told anyone but I've decided to sign up to the Open University to study a degree!

It costs the earth in education fees but it's something I have wanted to do since leaving school and I think it's a positive to thing fill my life with instead of alcohol.

I haven't told my partner or my family as they will just try to talk me out of it but I have this overwhelming gut feeling this is now the time to act - hence being awake at 2am UK time :-)

Is anyone else doing a similar thing? Eek wish me luck and stay strong x

Awesome, good luck!

I've considered going back for a Masters and PhD, but just haven't settled on exactly what program yet

That sounds fantastic! I've taken a couple of free online courses since quitting, it's amazing now much better you can think and function sober, isn't it?

Do it.
I finally finished my degree this year and it feels great.
I'm definitely going to go further.
Good for you.

Just to update, I have discussed my options with the uni and have now decided to start with a Foundation Degree instead. I've not studied for a long time and this is probably a better way for me to eventually work towards a full degree. Thank you for all the positive comments, it's great to hear from forward thinking people as I seem to be surrounded by doomsayers in my life. :-)

Thanks everyone for the positive messages. Just to update you all, I've received a letter of an offer to start the course today :-)

I'm feeling just so worried that I might throw it all away and start drinking again. Let's hope in three years time I'm thinking about starting top-up degrees and babies.

I don't know what I will do if in three years time I'm still divorced, no children, in debt from my degree which I still haven't completed with a major drinking problem :-(

I hope the fear keeps me strong. Today is day number 8 since my last drink and I haven't really missed my usual bottle of wine on a Friday.

Keep up the great work everyone x

Rock on, well done!

I've always loved diving into new subject matters like that, whether it's a whole degree, a new language or simply (hah!) learning how to crochet.

It provides for a whole new source of motivation. and imagine all the things you can do in the time you would've normally lost to hangovers! :

Best of luck!

How exciting! I enjoy reading the posts of younger people, any people, triumphing over their addictions and fulfilling their dreams
