Robin Williams

Williams had been battling severe depression recently, said Mara Buxbaum, his press representative. Just last month, he announced he was returning to a 12-step treatment program he said he needed after 18 months of nonstop work. He had sought treatment in 2006 after a relapse following 20 years of sobriety.

Williams joked about that fall off the wagon during a comedy tour, saying, "I went to rehab in wine country to keep my options open."

It's easy to read into stuff, but I think that was a joke Doug

Judge for yourself
This was one of the best recovery interviews I've seen:

He did an interview at the time on Australian TV:

KERRY O'BRIEN: Why did you fall off?

ROBIN WILLIAMS: I was in a little town in Alaska; it wasn't the end of the world, but you can see it from there. And it was like all of a sudden I thought, "I could drink". It's that same thought you have if you look off a large building and go, "I can fly." And within a week it was like gone, you know. And now, I realise I can't, so that was a gift, you know.
To me, Williams' passing is a sombre reminder that some of us deal with even more than addiction and alcoholism.

D

I think ALL of us deal with a lot more than addiction and alcoholism. That's why we're addicts and alcoholics. Addiction is just a symptom of much deeper problems. So is depression. Robin not only went to rehab in wine country, he lived, and died there.

yeah it got me thinking is it a drinking problem or a depression problem I guess its both. Can you be an alcholic and not have depression issues I wonder?

Wish he could have gotten better before doing this. I liked the guy and really appreciated his words on alcoholism.

That's the part that really gets to me - that he had so much sober time and the disease still got him. You start to wonder, if Robin f***ing Williams can't make it, what chance do the rest of us have? It's sad and terrifying at the same time.

I wonder how many people are present on this board who have never contemplated suicide. Precious few, would be my guess.

I used to contemplate suicide but couldn't do it cause of the harm I'd cause to my family. I can't imagine Robin's pain that made him take the most drastic way out.

I didn't notice when I posted it but look in his eyes in the picture at the top of this thread. What do you see?

Yes. Same here. It is rather terrifying to feel one drink away from this.

Plenty of chance(s) IMHO. We just have to make the right choices. As brilliant as Robin was, I believe he made a poor choice by living where he did. Obviously he made others. I'm sure he would wish that his last, tragic choice would help save others.

Hard to argue with that much. I spent a long weekend in Napa on a business retreat this past spring. It was certainly a poor choice on my part to go even for a few days. Every conversation was about which brilliant little wineries everyone visited during the day, how much they bought, how much they drank, etc. It was awful in a way that only a dry alcoholic can understand.

He did not die in wine country and did not live there either. He lived in Marin Country, which is not Napa. He was making a joke.

I think you mean Marin county. Political county lines apart, quite close enough to Napa. Only Sonoma, also part of wine country, separates them.

Don't need to live in wine country to get wine... Completely unrelated, and I personally have not seen a toxicology report yet....

And we won't for weeks, if ever. Doesn't matter though. See post #16 above.
