I am so freaked out right now!! Numbness on outside and top of one foot - help! I just started feeling this loss of sensitivity a couple days ago and I am terrified it is permanent... I'm 35 and I've been drinking about 10 years on and off but steadily, recently it's been a lot and daily due to stress. I was looking online I discovered neuropathy. I've quit cold turkey and scheduled a doctors appointment. Has anyone had this numbness go away once sober?? |
Expecting your body to adjust over night after 10 years of drinking is unrealistic, your body suffered dealing with a poison for 10 years, it needs plenty of time, probably a few months, even a year to heal physically and mentally!! Be realistic, a Dr appt is a good idea, but it will take time, the body can't reset years of drinking in a night!! |

Hi Sunnygal - welcome :) First off don't panic. Second, stop looking at Dr Google :) Make an appointment with your Dr. That's the only way you can find out for sure what this is. There's a myriad of possible reasons for every symptom :) The great likelihood is that it's not serious or irreversible, but you'll never know until you let a medico take a look :) D |
They have certain medicines that at times can be given for certain medical issues. Just one more reason why when things such as this come up its best to get to a doctor asap. Mountainman |
Hi Sunnygal, I have some loss of sensitivity on my left big toe area. Have had this now for several months. I have no idea what it is. And wasn't really that concerned (maybe I should be!). I read up on it and found that numbness in feet can sometimes indicate diabetes. I do know that I'm hypoglycemic and so I've recently changed my diet to eating Paleo. Going to make a doctor's appt to get a thorough checkup just to make sure there's nothing seriously wrong. That's what I'd recommend to you too. Just make an appt to have everything checked out. |
:welcome I too would suggest seeing a doctor about it. :) |
A few years ago, I had numbness and tingling in my hands that went away after several weeks of sobriety. |
Thank you all for your responses. I have a primary care appt Tuesday (earliest I could get) and acupuncture tomorrow. This has really shaken me up. I just pray that it will eventually repair and go completely away. It's comforting to know some others have had it do so. |

Just wanted to share an update. I went to a general doc this afternoon, and she seems to think it is something like a compressed/inflamed nerve(s), not neuropathy. She said neuropathy happens in both feet at the same time. She said we would wait a month and see how things progress. I have to say I am relieved... but didn't some of you say you had it in just one foot or hand? They drew blood to check my B and thiamin levels, if I'm anemic, etc. too. I think I am doing pretty good, wrapping up day 6, the shakes seem to be subsiding, I feel more level headed. Been to the acupuncturist twice, also, which seems to help. Still occasionally thinking about getting a bottle of wine, just one glass... But the cravings aren't too strong luckily. I told my estranged husband I quit. He said he's been trying too, I asked for how long and he said a couple of days. I know for a fact he went drinking last night. More lies. THAT makes me want to drink. But, no, I will stay on this winning streak. For ME. |
I thought/hoped it would be something like that sunnygal :) stay strong - you've made a great decision! D |
One of my best friends Dad was a heavy drinker, for years he had lower back pain and I'm pretty sure numbness in one leg. After many years of discomfort it was discovered he had neuropathy. They suggested the booze was the root issue, he quit and it more or less solved the problem. Glad your working with a Dr, whatever you have going on deserves medical attn. Also glad your on here and focused staying sober. |
I had numbness & tingling of my hands & feet 3 years ago it went when i stopped drinking, i was clean for 3 months, i now have it back it also affects my face now, it will go if you stop. Alcohol affects the nerves thats why you get the tingling, also you can get itchy to. |
Hi all, Just wanted to check in with an update. I'm on day 16 and feeling pretty strong about that. I'm supposed to go to a 4th of July block party (usually with lots of drinking) so I'm hoping I can ride it out sober. I've been getting bi-weekly acupuncture and doing daily walks/hikes. Overall my body feels healthier. My mind feels clearer. Unfortunately my foot doesn't seem to have gained the lost sensitivity back. Maybe it just needs more time? Hoping, praying... I seem to notice it less, unless I touch it - it feels like partially asleep along the outside and half of the top. I know the doctor said it probably isn't neuropathy but still freaked out it won't go back to normal. Anyway, thanks for listening. |
Great job on Day 16!! . . . so glad you went to see a Dr to get checked out!! Keep pushing through!! :You_Rock_ |
