There's nothing stopping you from building a new social life BigS.

We can think about it and complicate it a lot as adults but the basic moves of making friends are the same now as they were in grade school - we're just us and that's all we need to be - get yourself out there - in 'safe' situations, and friendships happen.

My friends now know me as a teetotaler - no mess no fuss

You know, it occurs to me that they bear some responsibility here too. Once it is clear you would not be participating, what's to stop them from deemphasizing the role of booze in this gathering? One might ask them whether the drinking is as important to them as your friendship. They are "electing" a certain path just as you are.
