Bad Breath and Bad Taste in Mouth

Hey everyone! I decided to cut out alcohol for good yesterday. But I wanted to ask something regarding the title. I noticed that since I began binge drinking, I had seemed to develop very bad breath. Others never seemed to notice but I could always taste it and smell it.

Is this a common side effect of heavy drinking? Thanks!

Could be.

I have noticed a constant burning sensation in my mouth since I quit.

I guess it makes sense for it to irritate the mouth.

When I stopped it took about a month before my mouth started feeling healthy again. Heavy drinking does a seriously harsh number on your oral mucosa. Not to mention, given all the fluid imbalances and dehydration going on. Add in some post-binge puking, snoring, passed-out mouth-breathing (and for some, concomitant tobacco use) and you have a recipe for major irritation. I was drinking tons of water and even that seemed to irritate my mouth in the first few days. There was burning and a generally nasty, pasty taste. It takes time for those tissues to heal and get normal.

It's great to see you committing to sobriety and taking care of yourself! Be well.

Thank you for the reply, it seems to make sense. Glad to know it will go away though.

Likewise, take care.
