“The soul should always stand ajar, ready to welcome the ecstatic experience.”
― Emily Dickinson
Without alcohol, drugs, or any other form of being numb, my soul stands ajar. With that comes risk, because while an ajar soul is ready to welcome joy, it is also open to let in pain. There is no more fear today of allowing pain in. I know now that pain will not kill me. I know now that in life there are productive struggles I must go through. I welcome these lessons now, rather than avoid them.
Seven years ago I decided to quit drinking for good. There have been ecstatic experiences, there have been times of deep despair, and everything in between. Not hiding behind the bottle and feeling everything full-on makes for a hell of a ride.
I'm thankful for the friends I've made here at SR. There are so many wise, authentic, introspective members I've been honored to meet here. Some I've come to know well, some I've only read, and some I've gone toe-to-toe with. Thank you for challenging my thinking and stretching my mind, and for being brave enough to let your souls stand ajar.

Congratulations on the 7 years. That is an awesome quote as well. You are one of the posters I identified with early on. I am so thankful people with that kind of sobriety keep coming around and helping us that haven't made it that far yet.
