Getting sober and trading addictions
When you were newly sober, did you trade addictions?
I now smoke and have a serious addiction to energy drinks. It's really unhealthy and I think the energy drinks in particular are making me very irritable.

My life is a constant whirlwind of preparing for my next addiction. Luckily, I've already faced 3 of the biggest...gambling, smoking and alcohol. Maybe next time I can get hooked on popsicles or something...that would be a lovely change! Good luck!
Good topic. I've been dealing with this a bit myself. I was told not to quit smoking in my first year by several people in AA with long term sobriety including my sponsor. I've always been a big music fan and I found myself getting on iTunes and making impulse purchases maybe more than I should since being sober. I was eating a lot more sweets for a while and now I've been into the energy drinks a bit myself lately. I try to keep these things in check but I know I have a penchant for addictive behavior. None of this however has made my life unmanageable or caused me to hurt my family and friends or cause me to get locked up. So I just try to keep it all in check. Sometimes I do better than others but it's progress not perfection to me. As long as I don't drink I feel like I'll be ok.
When I first gave up smoking I took up sugar, I could not get enough. big economy size packets of lollies and chocolates.
I ended up with pre-diabetes. Yippee I am a non smoker, oh, oops I am pre diabetic. I am OK now, no meds, just exercise and no sugar.
The last time I gave up drinking I got seriously addicted to Candy crush saga, it was on my phone, on the ipad on the computer. If I woke up in the middle of the night, I would play a couple of games.
This time, I have not traded addictions, perhaps a little addicted to here at SR, just a little.

Yes, I agree. I drink about 6 Red Bulls a day and abut 3 cups of coffee...while I do enjoy the energy bursts, I don't enjoy the irritability it brings. Need to find something positive. Am thinking of trying cooking.
I used nicotine and caffeine. Of course it was socially accepted back then. I remember when the first non smoking meeting started up. I would of bet my paycheck the meeting would fail. (Typical smoker). Thankfully, smoking meetings are a thing in the past in my area.
