Short version: If God didn't give us more than we can handle, why would we need God?

Thx paper
I've always thot the same thing bout that verse but was "afraid" if that's the word to question it. But that article makes perfect sense & more so verse in Matthew which I've heard b4 but never correlated it to trials

The saying is actually a wishful thinking distortion of a verse from the Bible. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." (It's in someone's signature line here on SR actually!)

So the actual verse really places a lot of responsibility on us. God gives us more than we can handle all the time (the Bible is full of evidence of this!). It teaches us to rely on Him. But He is merciful and will not let us be tempted or tested beyond what we can resist. When I first started in recovery, this kind of ticked me off. I felt like it wasn't true, that I could not resist the cravings and mental obsession for alcohol. But God was right! And when my obsession and cravings are the worst, He always gives me an out. I just have to want to stay sober more than I want to use the temptation as an excuse to drink.

*Obviously if you don't agree with the concept of God or the teachings of the Bible, then please disregard as not applicable to you. I'm not looking for a fight here.

Sometimes I feel like God gets all the credit for the good things in our lives, but when things are going crappy it's some trial or test, or our inability to not handle it. I don't understand - still working on it.
