327 - The Shining

Hello Everyone,

My sobriety date is on March 27 (3/27). Since becoming sober, I have thought of 327 as my lucky number (or numbers 3-2-7).

Recently, I began noticing the number 3-2-7 at least once a day for a week. At first I thought "I should play the lottory." But not knowing how, I didnt and sure enough 3-2-7 came out as the daily numbers - whoops! After that, I continued to see those numbers everyday (unusual) on license plates, signs, phone numbers, and then finally in a movie.

Have you ever seen or read Steven Kings 'The Shining'? With all this thought of 327 in my head I came home one night, turned on the TV and the shining movie is on (with Jack Nicholas).

Incase you dont know the Shining story, Ill just point out 2 most important things which relate to my story here today:
1) lead character is recovering alcoholic
2) the room in the hotel is #327

I got to thinking.... I havent been to a meeting in almost 2 weeks (thats unusual for me). I am happy to say I am back on schedule with attending regular meetings and the people there seemed happy to see me and I have to say I was glad to see then also.

To top it all off... One of the guys who spoke at the meeting I really identified with as my own story and struggle with Alcohol. Anyways... I just figured Id share this with you folks and tgank you for being here.

Id be interested to read any others who have had similar experience(s) as a reminder to get to a meeting...

I wouldn't say the lead was "recovering" more like just not drinking! Congrats on your sobriety and remember that meeting makers make it!

April 4th 2004 I woke up at 4:44 AM and turned on the radio. It was 44 degrees out. Got in my car to go to work and the odometer read 44,444 miles. When I got to work the only parking space open was #44. All day long the number 4 kept popping up in the strangest places.

On my way home from work, I stopped at the horse race track. Sure enough, the racing schedule showed a horse named "Lucky Four's was running as the #4 horse in the 4th race.

I placed $444 on it to win/place/show. Sure enough, it came in 4th place.

Ryno as long as you don't start typing here a million times: "all work and no booze make Ryno a dull boy"
We may get worried!
I get 11:11, 4:44 etc every day, often twice or three times a day. Coincidence or a spiritual sign? I wonder. I used to see it as a sign of foreboding now I'm like "Hey its 10:10, coooool bro!".

I have had too many of these sorts of experiences to recount. There is a term for this called synchronicity.

I believe that just as events are ordered by causality, there is also an order to things that has to do with meaning and/or information. This order is sometimes expressed in the form of meaningful ‘coincidences’ or synchronicity.

I have found that these meaningful coincidences often come in flurries that can last from a few days to several weeks.

I have long puzzled about what might be a greater meaning expressed by these events. While I don’t blame Boleo for making a win (1st) place (2nd) or show (3rd) bet on lucky 4’s , I'm not sure that these events foretell anything specific. The only greater meaning I have been able to attach to synchronistic events are that they seem to precede a period of great change of some sort for those that experience them.

Here is a link to more information about the phenomenon ------> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchronicity

Cool story! The Shining is my favorite book of all time. And Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation is one of my favorite movies, if not my favorite.

To see The same numbers are one thing... Definitely cool but to have them be in the context which I experienced is entirely different. Im not just getting excited about seeing numbers im excited because the numbrbalready meant something special to me and cooincidenebor not I saw the signs and got back to a meeting.

If you liked The Shining then read the sequel Dr. Sleep. It is the story of the little boy and wouldn't ya know it, he is in AA. Coincidence? I think not!

Dead serious. It is a good book. I am half way through. Whoever did the research in how AA works did a good job. I mean it is not the entire story of course but the when he talks about it, you can feel the character is an alcoholic.

Synchronicity is a great term for this experience. Selective perception is similar (ever buy a car, and suddenly find that the world seems to be full of that exact same car?).

Whenever I'm doing laundry, I often grab exactly the right amount of hangers for the things that need to be hung up. Some great cosmic phenomenon? I doubt it. Still Interesting, though.

Loved your Story!

I just want to update everyone on this... Since I went to that meeting that night - I HAVE NOT SEEN 327 since then... Synchronicity or maybe just a sign from my higher power - either way it got me there and kept me sober another day. Thanks to all you folks that commented and enjoyed my story.

It seems Stephen King is drawing on his own experience.

Yes. I had no idea he was an alcoholic until I finished Dr. Sleep and read some of the history and his personal Thank yous to the people in this life.

The book reflects it a great deal. I could see myself, the alcoholic, in the character many times. It was a good read.
