Thiamine (VIT B1)

How much do you need when your trying to quit and been drinking many years. I've got 100 mg of me doctor and it says twice a day. But I've read on the internet you need 300mg. Is my doctor wrong?

I got prescribed it last week and have exactly the same dosage as you, so I very much doubt both our doctors are wrong!

It gave me a dodgy stomach for the first few days but that seems to be ok now.

Most alcoholics are deficient in Vitamin B1, which can be a cause of Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome. Taking a supplement can help reverse the non permanent damage. I would follow your doctor's advice.

Yeah alcohol abuse and poor diet means your body doesn't get enough vitamin B1 and when it does it doesn't absorb it properly.

I've eaten so much since I stopped drinking, that's my problem.

I recently had a very severe GI bleed of which no cause was found and told the doctor what i had been drinking and was prescribed 300mg Thiamine and a B compound prescription. I was also on a IV Vitamin B drip in hospital.

I was put on thiamine. When it gets in your body it does has an effect. Twinned with the fact you'll have no alcohol in your system and eating properly, within a week you'll feel more healthier than you have in ages.I know I did.

Good luck

we're all individual with individual circumstances, and individual issues.

Your Dr examined you, he knows your particular situation and your level of health, he'd also know what other meds you're on (if any)

Presumably he's been through years of education, training and experience.

I'd trust your Dr not the internet
