Well, here goes..
I enjoyed your story. I think that you've got to find a way to let go of the past, but drinking is like glue binding you to those old memories. If you can put everything aside except your quest for sobriety, I think you will find many of your problems will take care of themselves. Just keep it very simple in the beginning. Try to develop a "Scarlett O'Hara" attitude for now, when it comes to your troubled feelings about your past. "I won't think about that today...I'll think about it tomorrow". Concentrate on staying sober. Nothing else matters right now.
You will be quite amazed at how some sober time will change your outlook. The things that haunt you will begin to lose their power. Please keep posting...I want to see how you're doing!

Wow, your story is my uncle's story (we are both alcoholics). My uncle ran the kitchen on a large oil platform in the gulf, feeding several hundred men a day. Spent 4 weeks out there and 2 weeks on shore. Got drunk every time he was onshore. He never really had long term sobriety and died in '98.
Have you tried AA? You can easily hit meetings during your 2 week furloughs.
