the true First Step

the true First Step
is to

keep the plug in the jug

many of us talk about quitting
dream about quitting
promise our loved ones we will quit etc etc etc etc etc
but
we need to put the bottle down
before we even have a fighting chance at this thing called sobriety

it's hard to get sober when I'm drunk
I've tried to help many of these
some recently have died with the bottle in their hand (while attending AA)

yes it really happens to some

Your right. The bottom line is to not pick up that first drink. Thats really is all there is to it.
But that bottom line sure is a doozie.

Simple in theory, but it can be tough in practice.

I totally agree bob.

Good mantra, Bob: "Keep the plug in the jug"!!

I also like the first of the original 6 Steps in the AA Big Book.

Step 1 back then -- Complete deflation.

My sponsor adds to that -- Complete deflation of EGO.

Whenever I'm not keeping EGO in check
real fast something goes wrong.

Took many years to realize this.

"This is the baffling feature of alcoholism as we know it - this utter inability to leave it alone, no matter how great the necessity or the wish."

"Pull yourself together man! Just don't drink!" But I can't do that. I lack the power. This is deflation at depth. Utter defeat.

My sobriety was the result of working the steps, and it came about when I gave up on not drinking, which was really another way of trying to control my drinking anyway, and began looking for a relationship with a God I had no feeling for. I was defeated, I knew I couldn't solve this problem, and I accepted that God could and would if He were sought.

My sponsor called to tell me I had been sober for three moths. A complete surprise to me. I had gone all that time without the need to drink. The thought had hardly entered my head.

One word that really helped me: surrender. It was only by admitting total defeat that I could begin to pick up the pieces and build a new, sober life. Took me nearly 30 years, but I finally figured it out:)

Well, I have noticed that life is much better without the drink.
Understanding more today with great thanks given to God.

Most important today --
being sober and staying humble and being grateful.

Whatever brings you to the decision stick to it!! Nothing bad on the outside happened here. No DUI, etc. That doesn't have to happen. Decide whatever hell your in is Enough, and make changes.

i agree. i used to hear,"keep the plug in the jug" and " just dont take that 1st drink" at meetings and id think," well no sh*t! HOWdo i do that!?!?!?

very simple concept, but not easy when the craving, compulsion, and obsession are strong.

not impossible, though!

"Once more: The alcoholic at certain times has no effective mental defense against the first drink. Except in a few rare cases, neither he nor any other human being can provide such a defense. His defense must come from a Higher Power."

Just how did I do that? I didn't. God did for me what I could not do for my self.

I dont think truer words have ever been said about sobriety.
