once the recovering drunk finally realizes
what they have truly been saved from
possible death, loss of loved ones, friends, personal property etc.
it seems that for many they will not have a clue or a desire
to be and stay sober
when I sobered up this last time around
I was in a deep fog for months
until my thinking cleared up
it would have been easy to try what I call some controlled drinking
even though it had never worked for me in the past
yes - the drunks mind and thoughts can be very deceiving
no one in my life has deceived me more than myself
I think that what has been of great help for me in my recovery is
working and sharing in AA, with my sponsor and on sites such as this
seeing the ones who struggle for so long
trying to get and stay sober
a gift that many never seem to attain
as many here know
I had a friend in recovery here where I live
die just a while back with a bottle in his hand
he was the latest of many who I have seen die to the bottle

a terrible life married to booze and the effects of
at times they seem not to have a clue
and many will return to their vomit

is a fool who repeats his folly.
it's what makes one grateful
knowing that

many here on site have complained when I center my threads or posts
if this is your only complaint of the day

That's a great post and rings true.
Many of us propably have had loved ones die due to using alcohol or other drugs.
My best friend committed suicide. And he was drunk at the time. It is most evident to me that alcohol can make anyone confused, depressed and in a dark/strange place that appears to be reality but is nothing of a kind.
This friend of mine was not a suicidal person. Never really complained about anything.
And just about all this. I can too see what went wrong with the past. It was the alcohol and I can clearly see that without it, things would've inevitably worked out. Then I have friends whose close friends have died of OD'ing and drinking too much. Alcohol is destructive. It is poison.

Center away fellow!!! Compared to the problems my drinking caused me that is truly a minor one......
And well said. Some of us pursue our 'right to drink' to the gates of insanity or death.
Sober we can at least be available with our experience and hope if someone truly wishes to avoid that prospect.

Takes a lot of hard work but that is eventually seen. You don't really realize just how sad and desperate you were until you've managed to get some good and happy distance from it. I'm amazed at how much of my life I spent fighting so hard to keep doing something that was entirely worthless that sucked the very life out of me that I thought it gave me.

after some good sobriety time
as I look back today on my drinking years
it seems as though I was in a daily battle back then
didn't even realize it at the time
I had gotten used to the pain and sorrow that came with the drink
I feel today like one returning from fighting in the Middle East
for me -- the war is over

I was very much upset because some of us on here are posting about their abusive relationships. For some reason your phrase "married to the booze" keeps reminding me of these posts.
on a lighter note - if I could have one of those little pygmy goats, I would. I could listen to them make their little "maaaaas" all day, all night. LOVE them.

today I realize
what a war zone (battle of mind and soul) that I was in while drinking and drugging
deceived myself back then into thinking
it was normal to break hearts, go to jail, get stiches, called on the carpet at work,
crash cars and motor homes, cuss people out, get into fights -- the list goes on and on
today serenity has been found -- the war has been over for some time now
so very grateful
