avoiding slippery places

Even in recovery, even while on SR for goodness sakes.

My AV. I have a small check I want to cash today that's not worth running down to the bank for...well just go over to the liquor store a block away....no need to buy smokes or booze...but it would be interesting to see the new displays.

Even today life can come down to one moment at a time....acceptance of the disease.....calling my sponsor...going to my morning meeting....and either not cashing it or taking a nice long walk to the bank!

So many other options than cashing it at the store...

All those slippery places will ALWAYS be
there. ALWAYS and FOREVER. They aren't
going away anytime soon. Accepting that
fact makes a huge importance in my own
recovery.

Each day sober, each meeting attended,
each step we take, each doing the next
best thing and so on is like putting money
in the bank to rely on for a rainey day or
something to rely on when we get in a low
spot in our recovery.

When we are in doubt about our recovery
and those temptation begin to bother us,
we can draw on that extra little change
we put in the bank or knowledge and tools
we learned in recovery to help us stay sober
that moment.

I would use my little change for a small
plant. Place it in a nice pot, add miracle
grow soil, fertilize and sit back and watch
it grow and in time see a new bud appear
and not long after a beautiful bloom.

Besure to talk to it, give it lots of love
and care and it won't disappoint you. If
it should begin to wither and it looks like
its failing, return to the beginning and
check all that you learned to do in the
beginning and see what happens.

It takes time and patience for long term
results for a plant to grow and mature to
enjoy. So is the same for recovery.

I believe one of the important reasons I am sober today is I said away from the slippery places. In supermarkets and such, I would not walk down the liquor isles, refused to go in a liquor store, and now 3 years sober and beginning to become comfortable with it.

All the way from the North Wisconsin to
way down here, several SR members
representing in Louisiana with strong
recovery support helping you avoid those
slippery slopes in recovery.

Even those grocery store liquor isles
with tons of POISON littering the shelves.

My most memorable one suddenly came up from not being in the awareness mode. Coming home on a tough Friday and driving by my childhood friends area I said it was quite a while since I'd visited so swung down his street. Suddenly became aware that with his greeting a full bottle is offered along with him slugging down a mouthful from his. Just in time I drove right by, Now that was when I hadn't drank for over 25 years! I made sure I attended a meeting that night. BE WELL

Thanks for reminding me...back in the 80s I went to an NA meeting in NOrleans with a naval buddy I met in Norfolk, Va! Also went to rehab in Metarie!

Have a very good friend from NOrleans who was displaced by Katrina who has moved back to NO.

A lot of my sobriety is connecting dots....completing circles.

I also must be aware of those streets...especially Milwaukee National Ave. ...very hard since the VA hospital is there. Saw on facebook today an acquaintance from Oshkosh who now heads a homeless initiative for veterans...in Milwaukee

NICE. Houseplants and gardening are my hobby. After reading your post I went out and watered my plants!

Damn Fiver and Hazel....where is General Woundwort and Black Rabbit of Inle' when you need them?

It used to bother me going to wally world ,The beer /wine is on the same isle with the nuts and water .

But now ,its no problem at all ,Knowing what alochol can do ,I actually feel bad for those pour souls buying the 30 packs .

Think about it this way ,Its a choice not to drink or not ,Just like its a choice to go to work tomorrow ,pay the electric bill ,car payment ,ect .

Our choices have a direct reaction -to those choices ,The real question is are you willing to accept the reaction to your choices .?

Im not willing to accept the reaction to the choice of buying half gallon of Jack and drinking it .

For me its just that simple ,but im a simple man ,As you will find the majority of country people to be .
