Is SR famous enough?
Is SR famous enough?
Many of us have found SR to be indispensable to our sobriety. I personally could not have quit and stayed sober without this site. There are many testimonials on here (including one from me) about how SR has saved lives.
But ... I really just happened to stumble onto it by chance after I put the right search terms into Google on one desperate night.
My question is: should this site be more widely known? (Or was I in the minority in not previously having heard of it?)
Everyone in the general population knows about AA. Maybe in this age of social media SR should have a similar fame.
Did anyone else just stumble onto SR like I did? Were you directed here by experts in recovery? Maybe some folks who have been on SR for a long time have some observations about how the site has grown and evolved over time....
I would be curious to hear any thoughts on how to expand the reach of this great community.

Hi Deckard,
I graduated from rehab December 15th 2012. I dove head first into AA. I LOVE going to meetings...AA and CA. I did stumble onto this site one evening back in January. I just felt I needed a sobriety place online. A sober home to visit before going to bed. So, here we are sharing. I love this site too!

I googled, How does the body metabolize alcohol, and the 1st website on the list was SR. Clicked on it, and in just a few minutes I created an account, and been here ever since. I have come to prefer SR to aa or na.
I found SR PURELY BY CHANCE.
Perhaps people need to get really desperate and too much fanfare would be counter productive.
AA seems to have similar considerations re this matter at times too......

I stumbled on here. I think part of AA's fame is that it has been satirised in popular culture, which isn't necessarily a good thing. I told my doctor and a number of keyworkers about this place and they fully intended to suggest it to other clients. I have never looked for any but I believe there are other recovery related forums too.
Found 10 years or more ago doing one of my searches (not sure what I put in the search box) and lurked for 8 (not sober that entire time), lost internet (no computer, no service) and got sober with AA, returned to SR when I had internet service about 2 months sober and haven't left yet!

I would not like it if SR was heavily promoted.
I stumbled on SR.
Its a bit like my secret world.
I remember days when I felt so desperate, like the world was coming to an end.
Then I found SR and I felt a little bit hopeful that I had found something that might work, might help, might make me happier.

I stumbled on it when looking for detox symptoms. Probably better that way, if you are looking for something you may be ready to change. If it was highly promoted you will get the dregs of the internet showing up.
I was searching specifically for forums that focused on recovery and sobriety. SR is fairly easy to find IMO. Google "recovery forums", "sobriety forums" or "addiction forums" and SR is at the top of the list for all three. Other search terms such as "recovery help" also brings up a link to SR.
Granted, I was specifically looking for a recovery discussion forum, but Googling questions such as "Do I need a sponsor" also brings up a link for SR.
I think that anyone researching addiction, recovery and alcoholism online will eventually come across this site.

I had searched for "Health problems of heavy drinkers" - Ha! Wasn't ready to call myself an Alcoholic back then. The first search result was a post from SR. I clicked on it, totally disinterested in quitting at that point - and I was hooked.
Nearly everytime I google something alcoholism related, SR comes up on the first page...so I think that it's pretty readily available as a resource to anyone who does any amount of searching.
For a few years now SR has been owned by a company that specialises in internet forums.
I'm sure they know exactly how to best promote this site - & judging by the steady stream of newcomers, they're doing a good job

What makes SR unique is its respect of 12 step recovery program Traditions. That is tough to find on the Internet. It goes a long way into making the great recovery site this is. Not to mention the respect throughout of all types of recovery methods.0
