Medication for alcoholism
Hi all,
I went to a psychiatrist today that I had seen a few years ago for my ADHD. I feel my symptoms are getting worse and she addressed more of my alcoholism instead and wrote me a rx for Campral. Has anyone taken this and if so how well did it work for you? Thanks! Mel

I'm aware of Campral, but I don't know anyone who's ever tried it. The research literature reveals mixed and sometimes contradictory results. Studies show that success usually occurs when the the patient is involved in 12-step or supportive therapy focused on achieving sobriety.

I would trust your doctor for her opinion on the meds. I had a similar experience where I saw a doctor for almost two years to address what I thought was anxiety disorder, but what the doc could clearly see is that I am just a plain old garden variety alcoholic. Ultimately the drugs he prescribed me were just to tide me over until I got willing to get into a 12 step program and address the real problem. It's working so far God bless.
