Sweet Tooth!

I have developed the most outrageous sweet tooth over the past several weeks. I want cookies & brownies in the worst way. I'm sure it's a result of my digestive system being out of whack, but I'm dealing with an urge that's at almost the same level as the urge for booze.

Anyone else experience something similar?

Think your bodies wondering where all those calories went and choosing to go,for the straight sugar hit.

Look in the health thread on hypoglycimic and alcohol. It's common, and giving in to sugar cravings can make relapsing more probable.

Sorry I can't link the thread, I'm on my phone

There is a lot of sugar in alcohol. When actively drinking I would rarely eat sweets. When sober I love sweets. I try to eat sweets in moderation, but if I get a strong craving for a drink I keep around some bite size chocolates or hard candy and I have one. I'm not saying that's a good idea or a bad idea, but it seems to work for me. I definitely wouldn't recommend eating a lot of sweets though.

I think this is fairly common, especially in early sobriety. In high school, I could have lived off cookies, cake and soda (thank god for teenage metabolism). In my early 20s however, I noticed I did not want sweets anymore, like, ever. It sounded almost sickening. I just assumed my taste buds had changed as I got older. It did not occur to me that I was probably getting more than my fill of sugar in the form of alcohol.
I too, have been wanting sweets a lot more too since sobering up. I little bowl of ice cream usually does the trick for me.

Yea it's normal. I seldom ate sweet stuff when I drank. But when I quit,I could sit down and eat a whole chocolate cake. The good news for me was after a bunch of chocolate like that, beer just didn't sound good.
Here I am 4 years later, and while I don't eat whole cakes anymore. I STILL crave chocolate. I havn't gained any weight over it really. It sure does beat the hell I was going through while drinking.

The sweet cravings were pretty intense for me as well but after 4 months they calmed down quite a bit. As early stated, alcohol puts a lot of sugar in to our body. Once we quit we have to adjust back to what we were meant to be without alcohol. I suggest hitting the frozen yogurt rather then ice cream...ice cream was my go-to sweet.

Good godda-mighty, did I go crazy for sweets. I still do, but I can manage things now...it helps that in my current location they don't sell Ben & Jerry's "chocolate therapy" ice cream. I could not get enough of it, I was also really into cookies from my local bakery and sugary lattes too boot. This is totally normal and will usually adjust itself out. In my experience, I was about 7 months sober when things evened out. Then the weight floated away, because I was both alcohol-free and keeping sweets at a reasonable level. I think you will eventually notice your health will be vastly improved, keep doin' what you're doin'!

pretty common for us when we get sobered up
in rehab years ago
every night it was sweets and ice cream for most all of us
the doctors did not seem to think it to be a bad thing
thus
we ate plenty
most of us put on 15 to 25 lbs during the 30 day treatment

I was determined to lose weight about a year ago. I cut out sugar and carbs for the most part, and lost 15-lbs. in two months. One thing I discovered was that really really dark chocolate from Lindt & Ghiradelli (sp?). It's like 90% cacao and has very little sugar, but tastes really intense. I'm going to try to get back to that mode and lose the "wheat belly" that grew back over the past few months.

What a good idea. Do they have the 10 pd pack? I have a NA meeting and then 2 hours to kill until bed time.

you are going to have some mighty nightmares
if you put away a 10 lb pack before bedtime
but
the way I usually look at it
still better than getting loaded

I can justify just about anything sweet

I have always had a dislike for sweets. I haven't had a candy bar for years.. until last week. I'm 3 weeks sober today and I took down a king sized Kit Kat.. and Snickers and 3 muskateers and....

Oh, how I craved anything sweet! I never ever wanted something sweet when I drank, but after I quit, wow! I'm almost at my ten month mark of being sober, and I still crave something sweet about twice a week. But for the first four or five months, it was crazy.
