Abstinence begins (07/05/13)
Hi all, have just signed up to this website and first of all would like to provide some information about myself:
I wasted my academic education (by dropping out of University due to anxiety)
I am in a poor situation financially
I gamble
I have isolated myself from my friends
I have an exceptionally stressful and unenjoyable job
By means of dealing with the consequent guilt, stress and anxiety, I have been using alcohol by means of self medication for roughly a year and a half. I have now had enough of doing so, and as such I have decided to stop drinking.
self-indulgent it may be but I would like to document my journey into sobriety by regularly updating this thread.
Hopefully this will prove to be cathartic, any support would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome, and we are glad you're here. Looks like you're capable of being honest, that's an indispensable trait if you're thinking about recovery.
I have been sober six months, I am using the AA program to achieve that. It seems people on the site use a variety of programs, Or just want to learn more about addiction recovery. I don't like to give unsolicited advice. I can tell you My experience so far has been that by abstaining from alcohol, And using the principles in the AA program, I am learning to cope with all the frustrating aspects of my life. I am starting to make better choices, with the help of my higher power and other sober friends, which is resulting in the improvement of some of my circumstances. Other circumstances are the same, but not as distressing to me.
What can I do to help you? Do you have any questions I could answer?

Welcome. Honesty with our selves is very important. AA and this site has many helpful people ready to help people with this problem starting today which I recommend as there may not be a tomorrow. We start out not picking up the FIRST drink each day even when we want to. The days add up and we get better. It's that simple, not necessarily easy but very beneficial to our lives and sanity. BE WELL
Welcome to SR.
At first, I thought the same thing. The U.S. uses month/day/year while other countries use day/month/year.
Pretty sure the poster means today. Wishing that person the best in that effort.
