Thinking of alcoholism as a disease never got me sober. In fact, I used that as a reason to return to drinking over & over. I believe the great Dr. Stanton Peele wrote a book covering how alcoholism is not a disease in the traditional sense. Also, my experience has been that society tends to not believe in the "alcohol is a disease" concept. Overall, I tend to look at alcoholics as a kind of a lazy bunch of underachievers. I think, sometimes, the medical experts will state alcoholism is a disease just to make recovering alcoholics feel better about poor choices.

Totally disagree. I think alcoholics are special, unique individuals and who simply got lost along the way because we eveually do realize that we made poor choices and do something about it.
