Songs for Sobriety...?!
Hey guys,
I'm sure there have been many posts like this before, but as there are new songs out all the time, and I'm always discovering new songs that inspire me in my sobriety, I thought a new post couldn't hurt!
I have a "sober songs" playlist on my Spotify (nerdy, I know) but would love to hear what songs inspire you in your recovery and maybe add them to the list, always makes me feel strong and optimistic to listen to my chosen tunes!
A few faves at the moment;
Drive by Incubus...
"So if I decide to waiver my chance to be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine and hold my own and drive?
It's driven me before, it seems to be the way
That everyone else get around
Lately, I'm beginning to find that when I drive myself, my light is found
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there
With open arms and open eyes.."
Shake It Out by Florence and the Machine...
"And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope
It's a shot in the dark aimed right at my throat
'Cause looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Well what the hell I'm gonna let it happen to me.."
Carry On by FUN
"If you're lost and alone
Or you're sinking like a stone
Carry on
May your past be the sound
Of your feet upon the ground
Carry on carry on.."
Not Afraid by Eminem
"It was my decision to get clean, I did it for me
Admittedly, I probably did it subliminally for you
So I could come back a brand new me, you helped see me through
And don't even realize what you did, believe me you
I've been through the ringer, but take it through little to the middle finger
I think I got a tear in my eye, I feel like the king of
My world, haters can make like bees with no stingers
And drop dead, no more beef flingers
No more drama, from now on I promise to only focus
On handlin' my responsibilities as a father
So I solemnly swear to always treat this roof like my daughters
And raise it, you couldn't lift a single shingle on it
'Cause the way I feel, I'm strong enough to go to the club
Or the corner pub and lift the whole liquour counter up
'Cause I'm raisin' the bar, I shoot for the moon
But I'm too busy gazin' at stars I feel amazin'
And I'm not afraid.."

I listen to a song called "Eon" by Celldweller a lot these days-my favourite lyric is "if time's a song, I won't wait for its reprise, I am done wishing, farewells and goodbyes, I won't let this place overshadow my birthright-I won't wait another eon"

Love "In the Middle" by Jimmy Eat World
Hey, don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
Just try your best, try everything you can
And don't you worry what they tell themselves when you're away
It just takes some time
Little girl you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright
Hey, you know they're all the same
You know you're doing better on your own, so don't buy in
Live right now, yeah, just be yourself
It doesn't matter if it's good enough for someone else
It just takes some time
Little girl you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright

Little girl you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright
Hey, don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
Just do your best, do everything you can
And don't you worry what the bitter hearts are gonna say
It just takes some time
Little girl you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine

Won't Back Down by Tom Petty
Well, I won't back down
No I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down
No I'll stand my ground
Won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground
And I won't back down
(I won't back down)
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
(I won't back down)
Hey I will stand my ground
And I won't back down
Well I know what's right
I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin' me around
But I'll stand my ground
And I won't back down
(I won't back down)
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
(I won't back down)
Hey I will stand my ground
(I won't back down)
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
(I won't back down)
Hey I won't back down
(I won't back down)
Hey, baby, there ain't no easy way out
(I won't back down)
I will stand my ground
And I won't back down
No I won't back down
Well, I won't back down
No I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down
No I'll stand my ground
Won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground
And I won't back down
(I won't back down)

Wake up Time by Tom Petty (are you sending a theme here, lol)
You follow your feelings, you follow your dreams
You follow the leader into the trees
And what's in there waiting, neither one of us knows
You gotta keep one eye open the further you go
You never dreamed you'd go down on one knee, but now
Who could have seen, you'd be so hard to please somehow
You feel like a poor boy, a long way from home
You're just a poor boy, a long way from home
And it's wake up time
Time to open your eyes
And rise and shine
You spend your life dreaming, running 'round in a trance
You hang out forever and still miss the dance
And if you get lucky, you might find someone
To help you get over the pain that will come
Yeah, you were so cool back in high school, what happened
You were so sure not to have your spirits dampened
But you're just a poor boy alone in this world
You're just a poor boy alone in this world
And it's wake up time
Time to open your eyes
And rise and shine
Well, if he gets lucky, a boy finds a girl
To help him to shoulder the pain in this world
And if you follow your feelings
And you follow your dreams
You might find the forest there in the trees
Yeah, you'll be alright, it's just gonna take time, but now
Who could have seen you'd be so hard to please somehow
You're just a poor boy a long way from home
You're just a poor boy a long way from home
And it's wake up time
Time to open your eyes
And rise and shine
'Cause it's wake up time
It's time to open your eyes
And rise and shine
You follow your feelings, you follow your dreams
You follow the leader into the trees
And what's in there waiting, neither one of us knows

I haven't heard a lyric that shook me like Timshel by Mumford and Sons. The word means 'you may' in Hebrew, and the song is about giving ourselves permission to triumph over our internal demons and over our past mistakes.
"Timshel"
Cold is the water
It freezes your already cold mind
Already cold, cold mind
And death is at your doorstep
And it will steal your innocence
But it will not steal your substance
But you are not alone in this
And you are not alone in this
As brothers we will stand and we'll hold your hand
Hold your hand
And you are the mother
The mother of your baby child
The one to whom you gave life
And you have your choices
And these are what make man great
His ladder to the stars
But you are not alone in this
And you are not alone in this
As brothers we will stand and we'll hold your hand
Hold your hand
And I will tell the night
Whisper, "Lose your sight"
But I can't move the mountains for you
"Timshel"
Cold is the water
It freezes your already cold mind
Already cold, cold mind
And death is at your doorstep
And it will steal your innocence
But it will not steal your substance
But you are not alone in this
And you are not alone in this
As brothers we will stand and we'll hold your hand
Hold your hand
And you are the mother
The mother of your baby child
The one to whom you gave life
And you have your choices
And these are what make man great
His ladder to the stars
But you are not alone in this
And you are not alone in this
As brothers we will stand and we'll hold your hand
Hold your hand
And I will tell the night
Whisper, "Lose your sight"
But I can't move the mountains for you

...there was something I forgot... somethin' that I'd lost somewhere, somehow along the way ...
In the park, I saw a daddy
With a laughin' little girl that he was swingin'
And I stopped beside a Sunday school
And listened to the songs they were singin'
Then I headed down the streets
And somewhere far away, a lonely bell was ringin'
And it echoed through the canyons Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday..
I remember it now (as I remember those sunday mornings coming down) and it matters to me, it means something to me and want to share that but at the same time I feel defensive so I guess I post this because I need to let go of my self protection and I'm not responsible for those who don't understand me, nor those who don't. I think we all have to go through our own personal hell. I suppose the difference is that in places like this it doesn't matter, (to me?). This self pitying used to be an excuse to do my addiction.
Come to think of it anything was an excuse.
Today I think I've just about run out of excuses. (But always one day at a time, one breath at a time as someone wrote.)
hmmm...I think I think too much. This song reminds me.
And that, folks, is the mind I have to deal with. A rubber ball in a rubber room. At least a bit more amusing than trying to figure out why I wake up in a ditch.
which reminds me of another song Johnny Cash sung : The Ballad of Ira Hayes.

Luke Bryan "You Don't Know Jack"
He asked me for a dollar
I said go get a job
And I turned up my collar
and started walking off
He said I don’t blame you
I know what you think
I just spend your money
to buy another drink
But you don’t know Jack
Double shot
80 proof
On the rocks
until you’ve lost it all
And you can't go back
To your life
And your kids
And your ex-wife
With just a telephone call
If you think it's just a bottle
In an old brown paper sack
You don’t know Jack
And he showed me a picture
Of two little girls
wearing Easter dresses
Hair done up in curls
He said God bless their mama
She said I couldn’t stay
Buddy if you were wondering
how could I throw it all away?
But you don’t know Jack
Double shot
80 proof
On the rocks
until you’ve lost it all
And you can't go back
To your life
And your kids
And your ex-wife
With just a telephone call
If you think it's just a bottle
In an old brown paper sack
You don’t know Jack
If you've never felt a fire
Running through your veins
If you’ve never seen the devil
Face to face
You don’t know Jack
Double shot
80 proof
On the rocks
until you’ve lost it all
So brother just be glad
And tonight
Hold your kids
kiss your wife
And when you talk to God
Count up all your blessings
And thank the Good Lord that,
You don’t know Jack
He asked me for a dollar
I said go get a job
And I turned up my collar
and started walking off
He said I don’t blame you
I know what you think

Try...by Pink.
Ever wonder about what he's doing
How it all turned to lies
Sometimes I think that it's better to never ask why
Where there is a desireThere is gonna be a flameWhere there is a flameSomeone's bound to get burned
But just because it burnsDoesn't mean you're gonna die
You've gotta get up and try try try
Gotta get up and try try tryYou gotta get up and try try try
Eh, eh, eh
Funny how the heart can be deceiving
More than just a couple times
Why do we fall in love so easy
Even when it's not right
Where there is a desireThere is gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame Someone's bound to get burned
But just because it burns
Doesn't mean you're gonna die
You've gotta get up and try try try
Gotta get up and try try try
Ever worried that it might be ruined
And does it make you wanna cry?
When you're out there doing what you're doing
Are you just getting by?
Tell me are you just getting by by by
Where there is desire
There is gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame

One of my favorites is this stanza from "Cleanse Song" by Bright Eyes:
"Don't forget what you learned,
All you give is returned,
And if life seems absurd,
What you need is some laughter,
And a season to sleep,
And a place to get clean,
Maybe Los Angeles, somewhere no one's expecting."
"Don't forget what you learned,
All you give is returned,
And if life seems absurd,
What you need is some laughter,
And a season to sleep,
And a place to get clean,
Maybe Los Angeles, somewhere no one's expecting."
Pink Sober
Pink - Sober.
I don't wanna be the girl who laughs the loudest
Or the girl who never wants to be alone
I don't wanna be that call at four o'clock in the mornin'
'Cause I'm the only one you know in the world that won't be home
Ah, the sun is blindin'
I stayed up again
Oh, I am findin'
That that's not the way I want my story to end
I'm safe up high, nothing can touch me
But why do I feel this party's over?
No pain inside, you're my protection
But how do I feel this good sober?
I don't wanna be the girl that has to fill the silence
The quiet scares me 'cause it screams the truth
Please don't tell me that we had that conversation
'Cause I won't remember, save your breath 'cause what's the use?
Ah, the night is callin'
And it whispers to me softly, "Come and play"
I, I am fallin'
And if I let myself go I'm the only one to blame
I'm safe up high, nothing can touch me
But why do I feel this party's over?
No pain inside, you're like perfection
But how do I feel this good sober?
Comin' down, comin' down, comin' down
Spinnin' 'round, spinnin' 'round, spinnin' 'round
I'm lookin' for myself, sober
Comin' down, comin' down, comin' down
Spinnin' 'round, spinnin' 'round, spinnin' 'round
Lookin' for myself, sober
When it's good then it's good, it's so good till it goes bad
Till you're trying to find the you that you once had
I have heard myself cry, "Never again"
Broken down in agony, just tryin' find a friend
I'm safe up high, nothing can touch me
But why do I feel this party's over?
No pain inside, you're like perfection
But how do I feel this good sober?
I'm safe up high, nothing can touch me
But why do I feel this party's over?

George Jones - Choices
I was tempted
By an early age I found
I liked drinkin'
and I never turned it down
There were loved ones
But I turned them all away
Now I'm living and dying
With the choices I made
I've had choices
Since the day that I was born
There were voices
That told me right from wrong
If I had listened
No I wouldn't be here today
Living and dying
With the choices I made
Goo Goo Dolls - Sympathy
Stranger than your sympathy
And this is my apology
I killed myself from the inside out
And all my fears have pushed you out
And I wished for things that I don't need
(All I wanted)
And what I chased won't set me free
(All I wanted)
And I get scared but I'm not crawlin' on my knees
Everything's all wrong
Everything's all wrong
Where the hell did I think I was?
And stranger than your sympathy
Take these things, so I don't feel
I'm killing myself from the inside out
And now my head's been filled with doubt
We're taught to lead the life you choose
You know your love's run out on you
And you can't see when all your dreams aren't coming true
It's easy to forget
When you choke on the regrets
Who the hell did I think I was?
And stranger than your sympathy
And all these thoughts you stole from me
And I'm not sure where I belong
And no where's home and no more wrong
And I was in love with things I tried to make you believe I was
And I wouldn't be the one to kneel before the dreams I wanted
And all the dark and all the lies were all the empty things disguised as me
I was tempted
By an early age I found
I liked drinkin'
and I never turned it down
There were loved ones
But I turned them all away
Now I'm living and dying
With the choices I made
I've had choices
Since the day that I was born
There were voices
That told me right from wrong
If I had listened
No I wouldn't be here today
Living and dying
With the choices I made
Goo Goo Dolls - Sympathy
Stranger than your sympathy
And this is my apology
I killed myself from the inside out
And all my fears have pushed you out
And I wished for things that I don't need
(All I wanted)
And what I chased won't set me free
(All I wanted)
And I get scared but I'm not crawlin' on my knees
Everything's all wrong
Everything's all wrong
Where the hell did I think I was?
And stranger than your sympathy
Take these things, so I don't feel
I'm killing myself from the inside out
And now my head's been filled with doubt
We're taught to lead the life you choose
You know your love's run out on you
And you can't see when all your dreams aren't coming true
It's easy to forget
When you choke on the regrets
Who the hell did I think I was?

"We're Not Right" David Gray
Feel the weight if this passing time
All those crazy faces run through my mind
And that song has brought a teardrop to my eye
Can't tell the bottle from the mountain top
No we're not right
I see this world but I can't relate
Hey that everything must accelerate
Betty Ford oh won't you be my valentine
Can't tell the bottle from the mountain top
No, we're not right
Can't tell the bottle from the mountain top
And now my hands are shaking
But i just can't stop
Can't tell the bottle from the mountain top
No we're not right
Can't tell the bottle from the mountain top
And now my hands are shaking
But I just can't stop
Can't tell the bottle from the mountain top
No we're not right
When I'm weak and my head is sore
And I feel like I can't go on no more
I come in here where normal rules do not apply
Can't tell the bottle from the mountain top
No we're not right
Can't tell the bottle from the mountain top
No we're not right
Can't tell the bottle from the mountain top
No we're not right
Yeah Yeah
Yeah Yeah

My new fave... All Will Be Well by Gabe Dixon Band
The new day dawns,
And I am practicing my purpose once again.
It is fresh and it is fruitful if I win but if I lose,
Oooooo I don't know.
I will be tired but I will turn and I will go,
Only guessing til I get there then I'll know,
Oh oh oh I will know.
All the children walking home past the factories
Could see the light that's shining in my window as I write this song to you.
All the cars running fast along the interstate
Can feel the love that radiates
Illuminating what I know is true,
All will be well.
Even after all the promises you've broken to yourself,
All will be well.
You can ask me how but only time will tell.
The winter's cold,
But the snow still lightly settles on the trees.
And a mess is still a moment I can seize until I know,
That all will be well.
Even though sometimes this is hard to tell,
And the fight is just as frustrating as hell
All will be well.
All the children walking home past the factories,
Could see the light that's shining in my window as I write this song to you.
All the cars running fast along the interstate
Can feel the love that radiates
Illuminating what I know is true
All will be well.
Even after all the promises you've broken to yourself
All will be well.
You can ask me how but only time will tell.
Keep it up and don't give up
And chase your dreams and you will find
All in time.
All the children walking home past the factories
Could see the light that's shining in my window as I write this song to you.
All the cars running fast along the interstate
