Anyone here have experience donating blood plasma?

Hello everyone. My name is Bri and I'm a recovering alcoholic. I know that this site is not meant for any type of medical advice, so I am asking this question just based on people's personal experience. My question is has anyone here either as an active or recovering alcoholic donated blood plasma? If so did you experience any bad side effects and would you mind posting about them? I have been in recovery for a while now and am thinking of donating some plasma today, but I just wondered if anyone knew of any possible side effects with liver, blood sugar etc. Just looking to find out if anyone has any experience with this. Thank you.

Try calling the Red Cross here in Ft Wayne. They can answer all your questions over the phone.

I use to donate twice a week for the money. I had to go through a extensive interview process. They do not let you in the clinic if you have ever been to a treatment center or jail. Of course, I lied like many folks. I was eventually "barred" from donating when I showed up extremely intoxicated to donate because I needed the money. I dont think there is any risk to your health when you donate because you get all your blood back just not some plasma.

Thank you for the responses. When I was looking for info on this I came up with a bunch of stories from people giving plasma for beer money. So since I'm not drinking it shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully they don't screen me out for going to jail because I have been there a few times unfortunately.

Your first few times there your plasma will be held on the side until all their
tests come back.

You will be paid for each visit. Believe it or not, now a days you will see
very few 'drunks or addicts' donating. What you will see a lot of, especially
if there is a college or community college in your area is a whole bunch of
college kids, coming twice a week to supplement their meager incomes.

I know here, today if one donates twice a week by the end of the month
a person can have about 215/month and that is not counting the many
drawings our plasma center holds. Our center here, the plasma is not only
used to make 'clotting factor' for hemophiliacs but some of it actually goes
to hospitals and to M.A.S.H. units of our armed forces, so they are very
very careful on who can donate.

I donated for many years, even after I became a diabetic, however, once
I had to start taking insulin I was no longer a viable donator.

So go for it, it is some extra money, and i know of no side affects to one
donating.

love and hugs,
