Day 1 tomorrow I have been drinking between 10 and 20 cans of lager a day for the last 15 years (apart from the odd day here and there). I have no plan other than I am stopping tomorrow, recently quit smoking cold turkey so I am fairly confident that I have the willpower to do this. |
Just a word of caution - quitting cold turkey can be VERY dangerous. I strongly recommend you see a doctor for advice on how to quit safely. Good for you on your decision, and best of luck. |

hi paul, it is good that you want to quit drinking. you might want to seek advice from your doctor. i quit smoking cold turkey also, but alcohol i want not able too. |
I do not want you to feel that I am ignoring your advice, quite the opposite and I am very concious of your warnings. I think I am still going to do this. I am healthy (apart from my drinking), will be careful and I can make sure there is always someone I can trust nearby. Unless someone categorically states that I cannot do this then I am. Also, thank you for your concern :) |
Paul - as long as you aware of the dangers to your health then thats good. If you you do feel ill, then you know what to do. I have 292 days and feel proud of myself at last! I want to wish you luck and hope that you keep coming here and let us know how it's all going. My best to you xx |
I certainly will! I stopped smoking by using the support of a forum and I am pretty sure I can do the same again. :) |
Preferably you have someone living with you that at least monitor you. I personally did it myself without a doctor and took the risk. Expect full blown withdrawl once your body realize it's missing it. It can be pretty nasty. Good luck and stay safe! |
Hi Paul Noone can tell you want to do - noone can tell me either :) When I quit I wouldn't see a Dr...I'd detoxed hundreds of times before with no apparent problems... my last detox I ended up with several mini strokes. 6 years on...and I'll never be the same again. I'm not saying this will happen to you, but it happened to me. lots of people have no ill effects with cold turkey detox...other people die. You've been drinking regularly and pretty heavily for a long long time. Like I said, your call, but do be informed about what you're rolling the dice on. D |
A very powerful reply Dee, food for thought indeed. |
Welcome to the family, paul. We're so glad you found us. You're not alone - we will help see you through. :) |
Thank you for the support, I am now debating in my mind whether to stick with my original plan or make a plan B. Either way I am stopping! |

Congrats on your choice Paul ! I can hear a deep determination in your decision. Getting the idea of "not drinking , no matter what" fixed in my mind helped alot early on. It became second nature after a while, since I'm so mule-headed anyway !?! ;) Welcome to SR, .......what a great place for support ! |
Welcome Paul (superb name, by the way...ha ha) I hope that your detox is safe and that you find sobriety is so much more than not drinking. Best of luck :) |
An 18 pack a day in the end for me, last day I had 30, I quit cold turkey without any real health issues, but I recently lost a friend that died after quitting, she said she wanted to find what I had found (sobriety), 3 days later she was gone. As other have stated, I wish you the best, determination can be your best sobriety tool, but be careful. |
Welcome Paul, best wishes mate. Stick around the forums and keep posting, it has helped me immeasurablely in early sobriety. I'm coming up on my 90 days myself. |
Day 2 nearly over, really tired today! Definitely need an early night! |
