Hobbies while getting sober

Does anyone have any hobbies that they do to help them stay sober? I've always wanted to learn to play guitar and I'm seriously thinking about buying one to try to take my mind off the alcohol and cravings. I figure if I just put half the effort I did in drinking in to learning to play I could learn to play in no time..

I do a lot of Fishing, but only with non drinking buddies. There's nothing better than relaxing by the lake and watching the wildlife, and of course, returning the fish to their watery home alive.

Well, I'm not sure this is considered a hobby but...since becoming sober I have been painting everything. Furniture, my bedroom, etc. Kind of mindlessly methodical.

Swim, Bike, Run.... I've been doing Triathlons. It gets me up and moving, I also listen to speaker tapes while I try to run. They are free on I-tunes...

I use to do a lot of fishing up until this year..Maybe I should go out and see if I can get that old outboard motor running on my fishing boat..

I've taken up baking since quitting alcohol. It takes time... requires concentration... and produces pretty things, and everybody loves you for giving them tasty treats! I absolutely love it... I find it so therapeutic! I read a lot, also. And spend every Saturday watching my husband play cricket... take the dog for a walk. I even enjoy mundane things now like cleaning the house!

I have started swimming four times a week, taking long walks with my dog, gardening ,reading, studying the BB, cooking, baking........ oh the list goes on

Also I am starting to get my creativity back... I find making things really helps me. I feel a strong sense of achievement

Oh and I am knitting again...

Sober is great. I have hobbies and actually enjoy my evenings and spare time

I've picked up the Ovation once since being clean. The wife asked if I was going to start playing again. I put new strings on it and placed it back on it's stand. Turns out playing guitar is not my thing.

So, no new hobbies.

Go and get that guitar! Check craigslist for a good deal.

I attribute my longest successful sober period in a large part to the fact that I studied and played an instrument every day. Also I lifted weights religiously.

You may find that you will get quite addicted to these healthy behaviors.
