that is certainly not the only thing AA literature says. the Big Book and other literature bleed abstinence-only and have no concept of harm reduction: they even deny that the concept can exist. it says, paraphrasing, that "over any meaningful period the alcoholic will become worse and not better" until he quits entirely by submitting to God as he understands Him.

I lied about mine last year. It caught up to me however. I used that as an excuse to drink again just so I could re set my dry date so I went out and proceeded to get hammered on my meeting night, I called my sponsor that night saying I wasn't feeling well, hung up, cracked open Smirnoff 26er and downed it for the night plus visits to the bars. Lying is the worst thing you can do in recovery, it drove me insane when I would sit down at my parents place, watch amazing race, eat dinner and them smiling at me thinking I was okay when I wasn't really. Then my sponsor remembered my 2 month chip night and I said I couldn't, asked why and I told him so that night I got up and got my 24 hour chip. ever since then I've been almost 10 months sober now. one day at a time.

It also says "alcoholics of our type are in the grip of a progressive illness." I know that was true for me.
