How do you know if you need detox oversight?

I have read a lot about people getting professional help when they initially stop drinking. I've been trying to quit my own habit ever since I admitted it to my family and have had several stints of 6 or 7 days sober now. However, I never considered getting inpatient or monitored outpatient care during this process. This leads to my question:

How do you know if you need professional help with quitting because you might have serious side effects like DT's or Convulsions/Seizures?

Ask a professional. Your GP can tell you.... or refer you for assessment.

I think asking your doctor, as awuh1, suggested would be your best bet.

I ask because I don't have a doctor, but perhaps it's past time I got one. Been avoiding it for years due to the obvious fact that I am unhealthy - and didn't need a doctor to tell me this.

Maples, it could be a very good idea to get a dr and to discuss whether or not you can safely detox on your own.

To answer your question, NONE of us KNOW.

I know of people who've had seizures at 3 days, 5 days and some after 10 days of the day of stopping drinking; and their doctor said it can be about 2 weeks after stopping, some later, some don't have any. We just don't have a crystal ball.

like SB says - none of us know - which is why we recommend seeing a Dr

I detoxed without apparent ill effects many many times - the last time I was not so lucky.

Be safe and get a doctors input
