Is this true?...

I heard that some people who are heavy alcoholics ends up sooner or later in a wheelchair due to weakness from drinking. Is there any truth in this?? Thanks.

Mr. Potato, yes this will happen if you drink enough. Look for information on alcoholic polyneuropathy.

Yeah, I was going to say, if you drink heavy enough and/or long enough you'll end up in a coffin or an incinerator. I suppose you may end up in a wheelchair on the way to the aforementioned destinations.

One of my old drinking buddies will spend the rest of his life in a nursing home confined to a wheelchair. He had a series of strokes. He's only 50 now and it started at age 48.
Another one is forty five and just had his second hip replacement. That's also a common thing among alcoholics.

My mother ended up in an assisted living facility in her early 50's. In a wheelchair. She couldn't feed herself, shower, wipe, or speak right. Luckily she regained those things over time. Not every one does. About 8 years later, her speech is still impacted a bit especially when she is tired.

My goodness. I never realised that alcoholism could lead to those severe symptoms and disorders. As i am a struggeling recovering alcoholic myself i am deeply conserned about my health. Thank you so much for sharing this and god bless you and your mother.
