I definitely agree with jc76 - I was having pretty shocking panic attacks until I got some meds from my doc. They had absolutely no mind altering effect except to turn me from a complete mental wreck into a "normal" human being again. You need to be careful with meds but you should be seeing a doctor anyway (GP, specialist, shrink, whatever - it's all good) and they can at least take away the attacks. Did for me anyway...

I will echo what others have said too. Get some meds from your doctor if you need them to get through the day but avoid the benzos. I'm on an SSRI/SNRI which has proven very helpful. Additionally I go to therapy to help me deal with the garbage I was covering with alcohol.
Of course I'm hoping to not be on them forever but for now I'll take it.
Best of luck to you all.

I actually already take a low dose of Prozac. And I have a prescription for Xanax which I don't dare fill. Although maybe I should, if you notice my new thread. (I drank a 6 pack last night to stop the panic.) Maybe the Xanax would help? I'm scared of it, though.
Ugh. I feel trapped today. Very hopeless. I want a sober life so badly but I am failing.

At any rate, we're not doctors so I'll refrain from giving advice about what you should and shouldn't take.
I will say that if I were you I would NOT take the xanax considering they are addictive, mimic the effects of alcohol and that I would be having trouble NOT drinking right now.
Please, go see a doctor, be honest about the issues you are having. They will help. I've heard good things about a medication called buspar for anxiety. Non addictive and such. Can't hurt to talk to your doctor about it.
