One of the many perks of being sober

I haven't had a drink for 11 days. I had a very busy week with several obligations above and beyond the usual week. It was such an incredible relief to not have to do that insane "planning" for my drinking binges--looking at the calendar and figuring out which nights I could fit it in, what time I could start, which nights I'd have to be sober, and taking into account where I'd have to be in the morning knowing I'd be hungover. It was freedom to not have that monkey on my back.

The lying, the hiding, the pretending, the excuses. Trying to remember on Friday what I promised a client I would do for them on Thursday. Waiting for the wife to go to sleep so that I could continue the insanity. Just a lousy way to live. Congratulation on your 11 days. You are just beginning the journey, but what journey it can be. Wishing you success ahead.

I was getting antsy late last night so I went for a long drive. Well I ran into a DWI check point. I was still nervous because I knew he was going to ask "where you going tonight" and I didnt even know exactly where I was, or where I was going. I got waved through so it was cool, but I know what you mean. I actually never drank and drove but it was still cool to run into one and not be on the other side of the fence.

I've also been the most productive I've been in years, literally. I am loving this!

I know exactly what you mean! For me there was never a waking moment when I was not thinking about it. Utter torture!

Well done on your 11 days!

Stu.

It's interesting how your daily plans just sorta "fall into place" when you're sober, and everything seems much more manageable.

Congrats on your 11 (now 12) days sober Brandnewday11!

SO much more manageable! Not to mention so much more enjoyable. And so much more self respect.

Thanks everyone!

I SO relate to this. The 'today is Wed, so I'll drink tonight but not tomorrow so I'm not hungover to drink Fri and Sat, then I'll take Sunday off cuz I have to do some stuff on Monday, but then I can drink Monday night when my favorite tv show is on.' Good grief. Sobriety is SO freeing. I'm about 10 mos in and I still can't get over how good that part of it feels. Congrats on your time, keep up the good work!!

There are many perks to being sober.

Blue Perk - Concentration Pro - Ability to get more done
Red Perk - Health Pro - Avoiding unplanned hospital visits
Yellow Perk - Money Pro - Water is cheaper than wine

EXACTLY. I passed up so many events just so I could stay home and drink. I traded living my life for drinking until I blacked out. That's not living. It's like hitting the pause button on life. I just hope I can catch up on all that I missed.

You've summed it up well.

I find the biggest reminders for me are when I am ducking out to do something - drop a video off to my brother, or pick something up from the store. In my past life I used that as an excuse to go out to the pub, but now I'm going out to run the errand I said I was going to do. I'm still adjusting to that
