Did they (at the rehab) recommend AA/NA or something like Smart, Rational Recovery, or anything like that?

I didn't "WANT" to be in AA....I got forced there.....and I didn't like it at first either. Stick around a bit and start doing the work though, and you'll find out why it's been in existence for 75+ years. I'll put the "sober & working the AA program" way of life up against anything and I don't think it would even be a fair fight.

Treatment facilities were mainly in place to dry us out. To stay that way......and to be happy....... any alkie I've ever met needs more than just not drinking to stay sober and happy.

jasper, get out to AA meetings. That's where the magic will happen.
Get a Home Group.. get a sponsor.
Are you asking for help every morning from your H.P ??

We can't do this by ourselves, I think you know that.

Wishing you the best.

Welcome Jasper

It's really hard to change our lives - a lot of us found we faltered a time or two.
So what have you been doing not to drink so far?

D

90% of people drink again after a rehab stint, usually within days or weeks. There is actually a company called "Sober Escorts" that capitalizes on this. They will transport you to and from rehab so that you don't "accidentally" get drunk en route.

"Doing time" in a treatment center doesn't mean you are going to stay sober when you get out. I'm sure the treatment facility gave you discharge recommendations, which probably involved AA. You need to follow them otherwise the 28 days was just an expensive "time out."

I left my Rehab center two weeks early....I was introduced to AA there and I wanted to attend more than the one meeting a day I was alowed there...Got a homegroup and sponsor two days out...Worked the steps...Live the steps and changed my life. It can be done. If you are willing to do what it takes.

You did not wast 38 day of being sober, at all. You discovered that that was the way you want to live and now you are pissed that you drank again. Understandable but you can not put the s*%t back in the mule. You drank you and now you regret it, stop beating yourself up and focus on the spending the next hour sober it will turn into a day that will turn into a week and so on...

Best of luck

If 'rehab' is so marvellous, how come up to 80 per cent of addicts relapse?

NIDA low-balls the figure at 40-60%.

I'll let you Google Sober Escorts.

I was actually in the process of finding some journal articles for you, but I now see that you are just trying to be clever, and are unwilling to read even a one page article. The first link I provided puts the success rate at 3.6%. You can do your own research from here on out.

No, it has nothing to do with wanting to be clever. I don't like when people just throw numbers out there with no backing. And I am perfectly capable of doing my own research, so you can rest easy.

The Recovery Home I attended in '89 was a 90 day program. The priest that ran it said that he would have it a lot longer than that but the govt. only subsidized to 90 days.
I wasn't ready to be "let loose" at 28 days, I needed the intensive care for the 90 days and then it was touch and go. Just my experience ..... I know it saved my life.
