The New Year
Today I am grateful for the gift of sobriety.
I have always heard the phrase in recovery "you are a miracle."
Last night around 11 something PM I was listening to the news reporters talk in Times Square. One of them said something about remembering where you were last year. It struck me like a lighting bolt. The contrast between last new years and this new years was incredible.
Last new years I was full of hopelessness, fear, misery, depression, self pity...the list goes on. This new years I felt nothing but gratitude and love. I was a little teary eyed.
I believe that we are all the products of a miracle. The man I am today is so much different than the man that couldn't live life successfully.
Whether you have one day or 50 years, every day sober is a gift
Much love,
Jay

Sobriety really is a miracle, Jay. I wish that I had "woke up" years ago. I never realized all of the negative harm that I was doing to myself until I recently stopped drinking. You pegged it when you mentioned "hopelessness, self pity." I never realized that I was making things much worse. Kind of like if I had stuck my hand in the cage of a wild animal and got bit.....why would I go back and put my hand in the cage again?? It just wouldn't be worth it!
