Trying today

I have just gone my first 24 hours without a drink in a very very long time. I am alone today, and I am having a terrible time resisting going to the store. I have just not wanted to quit, I just don't have much will to live. I am a happy person to anyone I talk to, and I hide my drinking quite well. I drink about 10 ounces of whiskey and a couple beers every night. I am not sue I can do this, but trying.

I'm in the same boat, coffeeboy. It seems that everyone who posts here is also here for the same reasons that we are. We can do this.

Coffeeboy, You're never alone as long as you can come here. We've all walked where you're walking now. We understand like no one else can.

I fell back on drinking so many times out of habit. I convinced myself it was making me calm and happy. It was doing just the opposite. At the end of my drinking career, I couldn't be without it in my system, or I'd shake. I can never go back to those days of being a slave to it.

You can set yourself free, too. You're already on your way - 24 hours without a drink - that's huge. You can do this, coffee, and have a whole new life. We're on your side, and cheering you on.

Coffee, F3, Perea - I'm sending good thoughts to all three of you.

Hang in there - it gets worse, but then so much better.

Read up on SR, find support in your community (friends, AA, other groups, Dr, counsellor, family), and take it one day at a time. Or one hour at a time. Or one minute at a time. Whatever you need.

Keep posting if you're feeling stir crazy, we've got a good group here.

I drink about 10 ounces of whiskey and a couple beers every night.

Substitute vodka for whiskey and that's about where I was at before I got sober.

I am a happy person to anyone I talk to, and I hide my drinking quite well.

Yep, same here.

I have just not wanted to quit, I just don't have much will to live.

Alcohol is a depressant, if you could get it out of your system for a few months you might be surprised at how much you want to live.

I bet mornings are rough, and it wouldn't surprise me if you said you drank a beer or two to get going.

You should see a doctor to make sure you have a safe detox, you don't want your blood pressure to spike. And since you are a daily drinker you should consider a formal recovery program, not just will power. Have you thought about inpatient, outpatient or AA?

The journey has to start with your first 24 hours. Keep going, it gets easier and better each day.
