Amy winehouse died of alcohol
LONDON, Oct 26, 2011 (AFP) - Singer Amy Winehouse was more than five
times over the British drink-drive limit when she died, an inquest heard
Wednesday, as a coroner delivered a verdict of death by misadventure.
Winehouse, 27, was found dead at her London home on July 23 following years
of alcohol and drug addiction.
The inquest, in London, was told she had suddenly drunk heavily after
abstaining from alcohol for three weeks and was poisoned by alcohol.
The singer had 416 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
The legal drink-drive limit is 80mg.
Coroner Suzanne Greenway said: "She had consumed sufficient alcohol at
416mg per decilitre (of blood) and the unintended consequence of such
potentially fatal levels was her sudden and unexpected death."
Her father Mitch Winehouse has said that his daughter made repeated
attempts to quit alcohol but without any medical supervision.
Following her death, Winehouse's 2006 album "Back to Black" has become the
Britain's highest-selling album of the 21st century.
She rocketed to fame after winning five Grammy awards off the back of "Back
to Black" and famously sang about her refusal to seek treatment for her
addiction in her single "Rehab".
Winehouse was found in bed in her flat in the trendy north London
neighbourhood of Camden on July 23.
Police recovered three empty bottles of vodka, two large and one small,
from her home.
The inquest heard confirmation that a post-mortem examination of her body
found her vital organs in good health and with no traces of illegal drugs.
But the high level of alcohol in her system probably stopped her breathing
and plunged her into a coma.
Winehouse is believed to have come close to death four years earlier, in
August 2007, following an overdose.
She was admitted to a London hospital after taking cocaine, ecstasy,
ketamine and marijuana.
There were hopes that she could be returning to full health after she spent
eight months on the Caribbean island of St Lucia, but her comeback soon fizzled
out amid reports of shambolic performances at low-key concerts.

With 21 yrs sobriety and hearing
another story of how someone died
of too much alcohol is enough for me
to confirm that there will never ever
be enough alcohol in this world to
satisfy my cravings for it. To drink
for me would mean death, wet brain
or insane asylum.
I choose recovery as a on going way
of life instead of death by alcohol.

So technically, she died of the effects of a massive binge after a few weeks of not drinking? I can see this happen easily to quite a lot of people, regardless their age. Respiratory failure due to alcohol poisoning can affect anyone, even if their body is not as frail as Amy's probably was.

Coroner Suzanne Greenaway gave a verdict of "death by misadventure," saying the singer died of accidental alcohol poisoning. "The unintended consequence of such potentially fatal levels (of alcohol) was her sudden and unexpected death," Greenaway said.
The singer, who had fought drug and alcohol problems for years, was found dead in bed at her London home on July 23 at age 27. An initial autopsy proved inconclusive, although it found no traces of illegal drugs in her system.
Pathologist Suhail Baithun told the inquest into the singer's death that Winehouse had consumed a "very large quantity of alcohol" — the level in her blood put her more than five times over the legal drunk-driving limit.

'Her father Mitch Winehouse has said that his daughter made repeated

So she chose not to drink often enough, and decided she wouldn't drink at all 3 weeks earlier.
Sounds alcoholic.

As a former (party girl) binge drinker, Amy's death hit me especially hard. You just don't expect to see young females destroy themselves like that.
Her family seemed convinced that she was off drugs. I believed them. But in my heart, I didn't believe the reports that it was some kind of seizure from NOT drinking. Alone in my house, I've drank myself into a stupor too many times to believe that one! Now the world knows the truth. Hopefully it will serve as a reminder to non-drinkers, heavy drinkers and alcoholics alike that death is right around the corner if you abuse alcohol.
I'm truly grateful for every day that I spend sober, healthy and happy.
RIP Amy

Unfortunately, for many people, this only functions as a PSA that "those people" refuse help over and over again, throw rehab back in everyone's face, don't need help, druggies will be druggies forever, etc. No matter how much money, resources, they are beyond everyone's help.
And once again, it just shows that no matter how many resources you have, even if it's the clothes on your back, in the end, it always comes back to you in the end. If you aren't ready yourself to get sober, you never will.
God bless.

This article (from Time Health website) contributes a lowered tolerance after a month-long abstinence from alcohol, to her death:

I've merged two threads here.
It's really sad when anyone young dies - for me it's doubly sad when it's due to addiction/ alcoholism because, as we all know, it doesn't have to end like that...
I hope she's at peace now.
