"live is what happens when"
..."life is what happens when you're doing other things"
a bunch of BS or wise words?
not sure i understand this phrase. help? it's my not-boyfriend's philosophy of life or so he says. And yet, i can't make sense of what the heck it even means. Does it mean one day at a time, in so many words?

Seems like a negative view of things to me. Life is what is happening to you right now. Good or bad. And we have more control over it than we think. In fact, that reminds me that I need to shut down my computer and go for a run because it is beautiful today in the Rockies.
If I recall correctly, your not-boyfriend has handed you a paraphrase of something Woody Allen said some time ago. His actual phrase was "Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans". I interpret this as saying that many of us are too busy with minutia and ego-tripping to pay attention to our lives as they pass us by. Good to think about!
"I am no longer captain of my own ship - just it's noisiest passenger".

Thank you all.
I am so happy that my plan today is to live. not other plans. but living now.
I appreciate the help you have provided in helping me interpret this philosophy.

I've always taken it as another way of saying carpe diem (sieze the day).
In other words, quit sitting around planning out your life because you are living it right now while you are sitting around planning what to do in it.

“If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.”
-Woody Allen
(I take both of these quotes as gentle reminder to stay present in the moment and loosen the reins on my control obsessed mind every once in a while.)

This is the actual phrase your not-BF is referring to:
"life is what happens when you are busy making other plans"
which means when you are busy living in your head, making plans, you don't notice what i happening in reality and miss out on the everyday stuff.
"life is what happens when you're doing other things" makes no sense whatsoever!
