It means someone who suffers from a mental disorder along with a substance/alcohol problem. It is quite common actually.

No, it means you are an alcoholic with other psych issues; with me it's Generalized Anxiety Disorder and PTSD, but alcoholism is generally concidered primary.

Please consult with a doctor for a proper diagnoses

We have no idea what could or could not be your problem.

You really should talk to a doctor, AkathisiA. All kinds of great info here on recovery, but medical advice should come from professionals who have a clear understanding of your background.

There is no seratonin test.

See a physician to get a diagnosis.

The following link is from the National Institute of Health and discusses dual diagnoses as well as links to peer-reviewed research regarding specific treatments. NIH is a government-funded research organization. I hope this helps!

Since I'm an earth scientist, I don't know anything about tests for seratonin. If you would like my personal opinion about the plosmedicine article.....well, that is what is know among scientists as an "open source" journal. Although it is peer reviewed, these journals are considered second tier in quality of research. I would trust the NIH research to a greater extent.

If you simply want to know whether or not a test exists that could detect this imbalance (and not whether or not it would be a sufficient diagnosis for you) - yes, there are tests that test urinary levels of neurotransmitters. You'd have to talk to a doctor about whether or not it's appropriate for you, obviously.

X-rays wouldn't show chemical imbalances. Maybe you need to see a neurologist.

Dual diagnosis isn't a method of treatment, it just means the person is diagnosed an addict with mental health issues.

Start with a psychiatrist.

They are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. They can check your body and mind and they know what tests are needed.

Huh. Never knew that about the dual-diagnosis.

I was an alcoholic with clinical depression, anxiety and schizoid tendencies.

Reset, you have a dual diagnosis.

My right eye used to be 20/400 yet my eye doctor never told me I was "legally blind" in that eye!
