antidepressants

I have been taking an antidepressant for the last few weeks and I'm now on day 6 sober....

I'm wondering since I've had no cravings for alcohol ( normally I would crave after 3 days) do antidepressants help reduce alcohol cravings or is it all in my head?

Anti-depressants treat anxiety and depression and related issues. There is anti-craving medication for alcohol. Best talk to your doctor about this.

Please continue doing whatever is working well for you...and check with your doctor before coming away from anything useful....

Well done on your sober time...

When my meds are working I usually don't feel like drinking.

I drank to self-medicate.

Considering alcohol is a depressant, you do not want to mix them.

I think I might have been medicating with alcohol too because I'm getting really depressed again now that I quit. I'm not really depressed when I drink (I'm either drunk or sick, but oddly, not depressed). I don't like antidepressants though. I think the side-effects are understated by the purveyors of those drugs.

I take fluoxetine (prozac) and I read somewhere that is helps curb the desire to drink.. Not sure how accurate that is but who knows. In my experience when I'm properly medicated and my anxiety/depression is under control I have a lesser urge to drink.

i am starting to wonder if one of the many reasons i can't drink is because i am on an antidepressant and perhaps it changes my chemistry in such a way that, literally, it makes things worse if i drink and take the antidepressant at the same time.

I'm no doctor, but it seems common sense to me that taking alcohol with any antidepressant will adversely affect the efficacy of the medication...and will likely have other negative side effects as well, OceanSize.
