Yay for saving money! :)
Today I went shopping for a bit of protein products (mainly inbetween snacks) because while dieting, I tend to get rather hungry on just my vegetables lunch at work, and I've seen people get good results with the protein thing. So I decided to give it a go.
After walking out of the store, I realized I had spent around 20 EUR. This amount of money I could have easily wasted on alcohol on a bad day/evening.
Now, I have protein snacks that should last me for about a _week_ (if I only have them when planned: when hunger really kicks in, not as a candy).
Seeing as these things aren't all that cheap, I could kick myself because I used to spend that amount of money on alcohol for one evening all too often!

Faith- I would easily spend 20$ a day on alcohol. At first, I struggled to buy myself something healthy/useful and then realized- WOW- I spent that much every day poisoning myself. Sobriety is an amazing thing
Reminds me of when I went shopping for a multi-vitamin.
I was upset at spending 15 dollars on a 3 months supply of vitamins, but then I had to kick myself in the head for a second. I told myself, "Ryan! You would spend 20 bucks a day on alcohol a DAY for something that was killing you! 15 dollars for something that helps you is nothing, and it lasts 3 months!"
Crazy how we think sometimes

I gave up drinking and smoking on the same day. It was hell at first, but now, I've saved so much money, I don't know how to spend it all! I'm choosing to indulge my love of vinyl, and buy some nice new clothes.
There are so many benefits to sobriety, it's insane.

I hear you on the $$$ ... I spent about $25 on booze/mix per day, everyday ... multiply that by 365 and it's a scary thing .. and I didn't have a lot of money to begin with .. (funny how we can come up with just enough to cover the booze habit, huh) .... Eeesh, I could have bought a car. :/

I calculated that with what I spent per day on alcohol and cigs, in two months I could buy a netbook and an iPod.
And I didn't even factor in the mixers (tonic/coke 0), the alka selzer and other hangover stuff, the doctor's bills and meds for bronchitis and inhalers. Etc.
(Still smoking GAH. But getting a kick out of not buying drinking paraphernalia).

I did the calculations too when I first got sober...(I was a cheap drunk at between $200-250 a month). But it covers the cost of my cable/internet/landline and most of the utilities for the house.
Since May 2010, I've been making double principal payments on my mortgage...hoping to pay my house off sooner...and I bought myself a new e-reader, some nice patio furniture and put some $$ into landscaping the house...I like stuff to look at and grow.

I feel you folks. In order for me to drink properly I need to spend $30 a day. If I only drink in the evening then I can get by on about $15 to $18 dollars.
Here's to financial progress due to sobriety. Hip hip hurray.

I think I must be saving at least $300/mo. I was the master of figuring out the best alcohol per dollar value. But it ends up being bottom shelf vodka (Popov, Skol, etc) which I just couldn't drink, it's putrid. So I always drank mid-range vodka which is also cheap at $20 / 1.75L which works out to $0.50 per drink. So a person can be drunk all the time for $10/day = $300/mo, theoretically. Obviously it goes up if you go to bars, but that's a separate entertainment expense it's not really the booze you are paying for.
