Quit binge drinking
Quit binge drinking
Hi everyone, I have been drinking for 14 years, since the age of 18. Recently (as in the last few years) I have been "binge drinking" quite heavily and would like to stop. Sometimes I can go for 1 week or maybe even 10 days without drinking, but always seem to return to it. I do experience withdrawal symptoms, like sweating, anger, and pretty bad anxiety. I would like to quit this cycle once and for all. Any advice?
Hi John
Welcome
The only way I know to stop, and the only way that worked for me, is not to drink at all.
I could have all the best intentions in the world, and then as soon as I had that first glass, all bets were off.

Yep.... not picking up that first drink will put you into a new dynamic. As you abstain from alcohol, new challenged will arise. Its learning to live alcohol free. Un-Natural at first, yet better as sober time marches on.
Hi John, I went from a daily drinker to a periodic or binge drinker. I heard a speaker say something years ago...."being a periodic is like making love to a gorilla, you can't stop when you want to, you stop when it wants to."
I agree with Dee and Zencat, not picking up that first drink is the way to go. Easier said than done I know.

I agree with Dee: to stop drinking you just gotta stop! It took me too many tries to finally 'get it' and stop for good, but it can be done and all the relapses I had aren't necessary. I just kept sticking my hand on the hot stove...
I credit my sobriety to the wonderful support here and to my terrific addiction counselor. Hang onto whatever support you can get and go for it. I love living sober. Nice peaceful life. No drama. No regrets and shame.
