I'm not bothered about Amy Winehouse. I couldn't stand her when she was alive so i'm not going to pretend I care that she's dead, but the alcohol withdrawal thing came up today so it's pretty relevant to this place.

I just feel that as a group (AA) we should be more concerned with those of us we come in contact with on a daily basis rather than celebrities. Just sayin....

Thanks for all this great debate. I should emphasise that the sources of the material are two tabloid newspapers which are both famous for gossip about showbiz stories. I certainly wouldn't suggest we use them for medical advice. But what is important is that because these are the best selling newspapers with a very strong presence online,

This. I read somewhere that she apparently went to a drug dealer's house and did a massive drug cocktail that would have probably killed an elephant. I seriously doubt she died from alcohol withdraw. That's just me though.

The 48 hours thing is generally right tho. All medical sites, doctors etc follow that general rule. But obviously as has been said it could never be 100%, you could probably still seizure a couple of days after that.
The Sky News story quotes a liver specialist saying the seizures occur in that period.

Whether or not she had actually gone past that stage I don't know, but her Dad seems to think she had been off booze for weeks.

Don't know how she died, and not going to speculate.

But, i wanted to say that yes, alcohol withdraw kills. It is the deadliest withdraw of all substances. The risk of seizures after being a heavy drinker is high, and without medical care, can be fatal. Therefore, for those of you planning on quitting, please seek medical help.

Its not only about how/why Amy tragically died. Its about getting the word out that detoxing from alcohol is a very serious medical issue that requires immediate medical attention.
It is not a secret that Amy was a heavy drug and alcohol user and complications from that use were more than likely her undoing.
As for her father claiming she had been sober for a month...well, as most addicts will tell you, that's debatable.

Please remember SR is not about speculation on how anyone died.
Other sites have rumors and gossip.....use those for shareing if you are interested.
I won't be on those...I'm busy helping others find their way.

More addicts die from addiction than from de toxing...tho doing it without medical supervision is indeed risky and dangerous.
Our SR members share often with their experiences....and we do suggest getting professional assistance.

Please do something positive so you can live a healthy future...

I care because when a person dies like that it brings attention to the illness...that's why we should care. Suddenly people are asking if you can die from withdrawal...this kind of public dialogue is important and will probably lead people to seek help, maybe come to SR or aa...seeing compassion for an addict who didn't survive would be a good thing for a lurker to see.

I also care because she was a hugely gifted artist whose gift was stolen from the world by alcohol.

I won't comment on what I thought of her as a person or artist because it's very negative, but I agree about how it's good in bringing alcohol withdrawal to people's attention.

I knew nothing about it at all before I started reading up on it last year and now all of a sudden, amongst friends I seem to be the spokesperson on the subject.
One friend said to me that if Winehouse did die from alcohol withdrawal, that I could wear a t-shirt saying "I survived what Amy Winehouse Couldn't"!
I did explain that getting to the stage of having alcohol withdrawal seizures really isn't something to be proud about!!

Bit of a contradiction with alcoholics knowing risks they have already brought on themselves don't you think.
Every alcoholic knows that there last drink may be their last, so in my book that is more scary then knowing the consequences of the withdrawal stage.
You need to look at the positives when and after the drinking stops, think about it if this was the case for amy maybe many alcoholics may try and knock the booze on the head before their body get used to the booze and then find withdrawal 1000 times worse.
I think this is a great thread which has started especially as its in your face of the proper dangers of alcohol withdrawal if not monitored by a doctor or controlled with the correct programme.
