Has anyone tried Hypnotherapy as an aid to recovery.

I would be very interested in your thoughts, opinions and experience

Years ago....I did it 3 different times as I was trying to quit smokeing..
Once was in a group setting...the other 2 was one on one with several apointments.
I still smoke.

I certainly hope you get better results...

englishrose,
i have thought about this concept at times. who knows if it really does work. but it very interesting. some people think they can just lay down on a sofa a few times and passively get hypnotized and the cravings for alcohol will disappear. but i feel that if you do you undergo a hypnosis without finding alternatives to substitute that drink, nothing will change. im learning every day that i have to find other substitutes for alcohol. bottom line. my desire is to replace the emptiness of what alcohol gave me with true peace and happiness. the trick is finding these things without alterations.

Tried it, was sober for a month. She said "What would be wrong with you having just one or two drinks a day when you go on your upcoming vacation?" 18 months of heavy drinking later, I finally got sober with no help from hypnotherapy.

They are not specialists in addiction.

In combination therapy, I believe it can be a great tool. Yoga, and Eastern medicine can be wonderful things.

Hypnotherapy, neuro linguistic programing and self hypnosis are all beneficial to recovery, but they aren't magic. Daily action towards recovery and abstinence is always necessary to quit any addiction. They all will help change your subconscious, but there is no such thing as an easy cure when dealing with a life long addiction.

I have used it as part of my recovery. In my experience, it works very well because I truly wished it to and had a very skillful woman who I trusted doing the hypnotism. I do want to warn you that as we deliberately change our patterns, we tend to need to experience them fully before we can release them. Every time I have worked toward changing patterns using hypnotherapy, the pattern has shown up prominently the day or week afterward....I would definitely still recommend the technique, but make sure you are working with the right person and are prepared for your patterns to test you.

Thank you everyone, as ever some very interesting points of view and experiences. Of course abstinence is the way forward and it will be 2 weeks for me today!

SR and its wonderful participants have played a huge part. Thank you

Congrats on 2 weeks!

Hypnotherapy did not work at all for me. It takes a village to keep this alkie sober I suppose. AA, therapy, making sure I am healthy, etc..That's just me though...

Funny thing I just read your post cause 5 minutes ago I woke up from a self hypnosis induced Sunday afternoon hour's nap. I have a couple of MP3 on quitting drinking. I don't believe they work to keep me from drinking, but they help me (a lot) to really relax and allow me to focus.

I have many other self hypnosis MP3 besides the no drinking ones that I use regularly whenever I just want to escape and take a short mental break. No different than meditation or deep relaxation. Nothing more.

There are also a lot of short youtubes that can be had for free, but I rather spend a bit of money for the MP3 than a therapist. I keep a dozen of them on my phone and computer.

I've read that only 50% of people are able to be hypnotized... although, even coming from a background in psychology, I'm still not even sure what it really is. I understand the concept. I do have an iPhone app by Andrew Johnson called Quit Drinking. Sometimes I play it at night as I'm fallling asleep. I never make it to the end... I always fall asleep, and that's what it's intended to do. I have no idea if it's helped... but I guess it can't hurt! I do know I've had next to zero urges since June 28th... that's when I quit drinking. And I've been listening to this app since right before that time... but, I've also been using AVRT along with that.

I used hypnosis to help with my eating disorder. It helped and I got better, but then I became an alcoholic, lol. I totally did not see the connection at the time (probably cuz I did not think I was an alcoholic) but it just shows me that both of these things I suffer from are symptoms of something deeper and I just went from one form of coping to another.

I use hypnotherapy frequently and it helped me with loosing weight. I also used it for other behavior changes. It did not hurt me and I felt it is beneficial. The trick is you need to believe in it
