cirrhosis, fatty liver, LFT ???
cirrhosis, fatty liver, LFT ???
I had an ultrasound of my liver a couple of years ago and the results came in as a fatty liver which would eventually lead to cirrhosis. Before I quit which was 82 days ago my liver function results came in as elavated and the doctor told me eventually it will lead to cirrhosis then cancer if I didn't quit drinking. It was the first step of many on my journey to recovery.
We alcoholics sometimes need to be told bluntly what is going to happen if we continue to abuse bodies. This was one of the reasons I gave up amongst a whole lot more. My question is have you had yours checked out lately? How were your results and what did you do about it? The results sometimes are enough to make you sick.

Hi Checkmate-
My liver is ok, but it took two duis and two totalled cars (with the corresponding arrests) to finally wake me up to the severity of my alcoholism.
I can totally relate.

Haven't had mine checked... I'm self-employed, no insurance at the moment. So I don't have the extra cash floating around. It is something on my mind often though. I'd love to have it checked out...
Had some dull pain in the area associated with the liver and gallbladder, not sure which one it was (could be both), but other than that pain, which is now gone after 14 days sobriety (yay me!!!), I've had no symptoms indicating liver damage. However, it takes a lot of damage to show symptoms, so I guess I've learned nothing about the state of my liver... LOL.

I had a complete physical about two months after I returned home from rehab. I had been drinking heavily for 20+ years, towards the end about a liter of vodka a day, every day. My bloodwork came back as normal, but I'm not so stupid to think it would stay that way if I continued.

I've been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. That diagnosis came after x2 liver biopsy's. The prognosis ain't good. Lowered my life expectancy by about x25 years (best case scenario). Have to watch my salt intake. Have a 3rd liver biopsy scheduled in October and may be placed on a transplant list.
The worst part is I've revealed this info to precious few people in my life. My g/f knows & safe to say we're not planning a family anytime soon if I won't make it to 35 yrs. Haven't told my immediate family yet as I'm too humiliated to let them know I've almost drank myself to death.
The sickest thing though is I'm not sorry. I wouldn't wish advanced cirrhosis of the liver on my worst enemy but I never drank to party or have a good time but to control anxiety. I saw tons of doctors who prescribed everything from Paxil to Cymbalta and it never worked. Alcohol worked for me at a young age and I guess if I die of liver failure it is what it is. Put that on my epitaph.
Stay sober all. You seriously don't want to be in this predicament.

My blood test have been coming back continually high for liver function I have had an ultrasound and a ct scan and both came back normal I see a specialist at the end of the month my doc says he will probably want to do a liver biopsy.
I wish I had never taken that first drink all those years ago.

5 Years ago I had blood drawn for life insurance, the only thing bad that came back was elevated liver function, I quit drinking for 86 days, eventualy that didnt even scare me anymore.
I recently went to a doctor for gout, he said it was related to my drinking and that I would die if I continued drinking the way I was, he made me repeat "Drinking will kill me" 3 times.
That was September of last year, he wanted to do a blood test but I refused, its took me this long to finaly quit, 142 days ago. I guess I am just hopeing I havnt cross the line of no return.
I do need to get a blood test but while I was actively drinking I was just to scared to know the truth...

I'm also scared to know the truth. I've had a habit of constantly checking my eyes and skin tone, my skin might yellow a little after a binge but clear up after a day or 2 of abstinence. I had full blood tests about 8 years ago and everything was fine back then, and had my kidneys checked a few months ago for something unrelated and that was fine, but I'm still terrified of doctors. I actually think I'm more scared to find out that nothing is wrong and then the beast in my head will tell me hey everything's ok keep drinking! I drank a good deal of beer but never took any kind of meds and have always eaten really well and exercised and am at my ideal weight, plus there are no liver problems in my alcohol-soaked family either so it's really a toss-up...
I spent a lot of time thinking about this yesterday, what if there was no threat to my health to keep drinking, what if I had a liver of steel? Then I reminded myself of the dumbass things I've done while drunk and that should be enough to not do it!!! My friend mentioned the other day 'You've only got one life' but I told him that I'm pretty sure I've lived quite a few now because I've had so many close calls with death (like almost being hit by a speeding train... twice), and these close calls have all been due to alcohol. So one way or another, that stuff will kill me if I continue on the downward spiral.

I had another Liver function Test yesterday. It's been the first one I've had since being sober. Also its a good idea to check for hepatitus A B and C in the blood work I did that last time and all clear.
