5 months ago today since my last drunk

12/30/10 was a day like so many others I had in the past. No I didn't get a DWI or arrested. It was the usual day of starting to drink wine in the early afternoon and by dinner time I was drunk. My son got home from school and immediately went in the basement to play his video game. I still remember the look of disappointment in his face. Around 8pm I went to bed and my adult daughter put my son to bed later. I tossed and turned all night and in the morning, got up and felt like death. Again.... like so many other days. I made the decision to stop the madness on 1/1/11. I had enough. I was fat, bloated, unhealthy and unhappy.

That day seems so long ago. My life has changed so much for the better. I've lost 25 pounds by regular exercise and a healthy diet. My family life is so much calmer. My kids no longer have to see their mom drunk. My boyfriend and I have a much better relationship. My business has been doing well and I've taken 2 vacations without drinking. The one last week was at an all inclusive resort with all of the FREE wine I wanted but it didn't even interest me.

I just wanted to share my journey thus far with anyone that is just startiing their road to sobriety and feel like they don't know how they will ever live without alcohol. That was me. Read motivational books, mediate, choose healthy alternatives to alcohol. The first time you do something sober it can be awkward, but it gets easier.

Wishing you all the best. It is soooo worth it to hang in there.

Great job mmh. I'm sorry that I spent so many years myself drinking behind my wife and kids back too, but I am doing the same as you. Exercising every day, eating healthy, reading a lot of motivational stuff, visualization- meditation, call it whatever you want, but I had to re-invent myself into a new person where the need to be healthy, fit, happy and a productive sober person was so much stronger that the need to get plastered.

Congratulations.

Well done! I am impressed about the all inclusive holiday - I know that would be very tempting.

More of the same.

Congrats on your 5 months! You're so right about doing things sober for the first time. It does get easier the second time. Thanks!

Congrats on the five months. It seems that we are on the same time frame and have gone through similar events. I too stopped drinking at the end of last year, have gone on two vacations one at an all inclusive resort with 24 hours access to booze and have remained sober.

I too have been exercising and feel so much better both physically and mentally. My Family life is calmer also, great description by the way.

Once again Congrats and enjoy your future.

Thank you for your post. It is exactly what I needed to hear. I was good for almost a week. Relapsed completely, but I have got to do this.
Congratulations. You inspire me. Day 1, yet again.

MMH, woohoo and congrats!

I know that look of disgust from family members all too well...one that really stuck with me was also from my son along with that dreaded question..."why are you drunk?" BTW, this was early afternoon on a Thursday and I was home by myself. It took me another few weeks to quit. Our kids are smart and know more than we think.

Thanks for sharing and glad to hear things are so much better for you and your family. Onward and upward!
