Anyone else with no family history of alcoholism?
I am definitely an alcoholic...there is no doubt about that in my mind.
Just about everyone I've met in AA have other alcoholics in their family, especially a parent or siblings. I've also read a lot of research that basically concludes that alcoholism has a very strong genetic component.
As for me, there is NO alcoholism in my family. My mom rarely drinks because she doesn't like the taste or the way it makes her feel. My dad is a light to moderate drinker, as are my sisters. Same things with my aunts or uncles.
I've asked my parents about their parents and their aunts and uncles about any problems they may have with alcohol. They were all light drinkers.
So....I guess I just drank myself into this disease.
Is there anyone else out their who is an alcoholic who has no alcoholism/addiction in their family?
Thanks in advance,
fragileflower

My family were non drinkers for 3 generations that I grew up with.
Their religion forbids any alcohol.
However my only sibling and I became drinkers who slid into alcoholism
and found our way back out with AA recovery years ago...
Of our 5 adult children....2 have addiction problems...as did 1 grandson.
when you think of genetics....you must also factor in recessive genes.
Sooo...what is apparent may not be what happened to you...I
From my experience and observation....Yes! we can and do recover

I am the only one that I know of (except maybe my brother) who exhibits alcoholic drinking. Essentially everyone in my family drinks, but none have the lack of control that I do. Even when I first started drinking I just couldn't stop; wish i'd seen that as a big red flag instead of keeping it up!!
Me, too.
Nobody in my immediate family drinks more than VERY occasionally (I think my dad now has one glass of wine a day for his heart--that's it, though, and he didn't do that until the last few years).
Nobody in my extended family, either, that I'm aware of.

Similarly, I am not aware of any history of alcoholism in my family. My late father drank regularly but only one or two whiskies a night. I don't recall ever seeing him drunk. He passed away some years back of a cancer that is not related to alcohol. My mother is still living and drinks a few glasses of wine most nights, never more. Brother, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins are all moderate drinkers.
Of my grandparents, only one was still living in my lifetime and she was a very moderate drinker. Similarly, her brother, my great-uncle was a moderate drinker. I can't speak for my other grandparents, it's certainly possible one or more of them may have been heavy drinkers - but if so, I've never been told.
