In my experience, the most effective path to successful abstinence from alcohol involves first the decision not to drink, and then following a plan to make that decision a reality.

For me part of that plan was to accept that I live in a drinking world, and that until I got my sober legs under me I was going to be uncomfortable at times. I could either decrease or increase that discomfort by my actions, but I was going to be uncomfortable no matter what I did. However, I preferred the temporary discomfort of early sobriety to the nearly continuous pain of drinking. Early sobriety, difficult though it was, was not as painful as drinking.
