Not all alcoholics are serial liars.
Hey, I was just askin...
I do not believe that all alkies are morally corrupt, evil, lying rat b@stards... So we probably agree much more than we disagree.
So you were completely honest with yourself... Not just whether you were alcoholic, but the effect your drinking had on others.

"The “Therapists” in A.A. already have their doctorates in the four fields where the alcoholic reigns supreme: phoniness, self-deception, evasion and self-pity. He is not asked what he is thinking. He is told what he is thinking. No one waits to trap him in a lie. He is told what lies he is getting ready to tell. In the end, he begins to achieve honesty by default. There's not much point in trying to fool people who may have invented the game you're playing."

Boleo,
Might be true for some.......but not every drunk hides a bottle.......not every drunk fights...........sorry I don't buy that we are all liars...........the only universal lie with alkies is the one we tell ourselves about controlling our drinking.

I find myself wondering why this is such an issue for you. We all come at this thing, alcoholism, recovery... With our own set of issues... My own opinion is that as a group we are no worse or no better than the rest of humanity...
Here's a quote from The Kite Runner that struck me recently. It's been on my mind lately.
"There is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft... When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal his wife's right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness."
You're stealing your own right to the truth.

There is only one sin, only one. And that is delusional thinking. So says Hindu scripture going back at least 17,000 years. Every other sin is a variation of delusion... When you tell a lie, you suffer from the delusion that you know what is best for yourself. Anytime you think you know best, you are delusional... Anytime you think you are superior, you are delusional... Anytime you think you are entitled to more than your share, you are delusional... Anytime you think you are separate, you are delusional.

You don't have to be an alcoholic to lie about certain aspects of your being nor does doing so make a person the scourge of the earth.
As we work toward absolute rigorous honesty it is for each of us to decide what we need to be shed of and what we are being dishonest about.
I'm a recovering crackhead. I never stole money or drugs, unlike most of the people I hung around with it. It's a non-issue with me. I read here, all the time, from loved ones of crack abusers how they will always steal, always lie, etc. In fact, I warn many of them of that very risk.
I know the person I am now, and the person I was when I was using. I did things I'm not proud of, but it doesn't define me. If someone wants to make a generalization about crack abusers, that's their opinion and that's ALL it is. It may have stung, at first, but now it's a non-issue.
Hugs and prayers,
Amy

I was a liar as a small child....at 4 I got my first spaking for lying.
Those years of lying had absolutely nothing to do with
either my drinking or recovery.
I'm unsure of your point MaryAn ...but hope you find both sobriety and serenity
