Can't believe I've done this to myself
You will do great, I will be thinking of you. Just be honest and let them know you are scared. My experience is you will feel a great weight lift of you when you realise they really want to help you. Hugs to you from your SR Friend

Hi ttbp...glad you made that appointment! We're all rooting for you here...I can't even remember the number of times I made a firm decision to quit and was drinking again the next day. Let us know how it goes!! I'm sure it will turn out fine . Any doctor who is unsympathetic towards alcoholism does not, in my opinion, deserve to be a GP (hence why most of them ARE sympathetic!!)

Well, I'm back from my Dr's appointment. He was lovely
Not judgemental at all. He is referring me to an alcohol community nurse if I can't get treatment privately. I've just called my insurance company and they said they will consider covering me, they need a letter from my GP that goes to their clinical team and they make a decision within 24 hours.
Thanks everyone for all your encouragement. I know I have a LONG way to go but at least I've taken the first step. My husband came to the appointment with me, that helped, a lot

Go to meetings and learn about this disease from the people who have it and have found a solution in the rooms of alcoholics anonymous. Then you will be able to talk to your husband about the facts and what you have learned. My husband supported me when I started going to meetings he actually went with me to my first round of meetings he tells me that he learned so much about alcoholism by listening to others share what they went through.

We will not disown you if you drink. You are a human being with an addiction. I don't have time to read this whole thread and I'm sure you've gotten awesome advice here. But please know that (as others have said) we will be with you through this progressive, long journey!

Hello everyone
Just to update you, today, I got back from 28 days in a treatment centre. I was lucky that my insurance company covered it and I get a years aftercare as part of the package.
Whilst in there, we attended AA and NA meetings and I also had to complete my life story, and worked through step 1, 2 and 3. I know I will work these again with a sponsor when I find one though.
I have a solid recovery plan but I'm still scared, I'm told that it's good to have some anxiety around remaining abstinent. I know I have to take one day at a time and go easy on myself. I am off to a local meeting tomorrow eve and intend to go to 2-3 meetings a week, plus get a sponsor. I have contact no's of my peer group that were in treatment with me to.
Thank you for everyone for your words of encouragement, it really helped me a great deal. I look forward to starting my journey with you all all on SR
xx
