Survived Bar

Went to dinner tonight on account of younger brother's 25th birthday. Didn't have any alcohol - others did. This I don't consider remarkable, since the main purpose there was dinner.

After dinner, eight of us went to a bar for drinks to celebrate more, where the only purpose was to drink, and I just sat there at the bar not drinking while everyone else did.

Someone did ask me if it would bother me, but I said that it would not.

I'm not sure what to make of it. It did feel somewhat strange, but it didn't bother me too much. I didn't chew my nails. :-)

I'm almost 60 days into this. Just wanted to share.

Stay strong, people.

Great job JBC.......it can be done. Is it possible that you could do it everyday if you wanted to?

Surprisingly, I did not sneak out back for one. No.

No hugs in public! - I have a reputation to maintain. :-)

Good deal. There are going to be situations where we are going to be around drinking. I hope I handle it as well as you did.

Glad you are continueing to move foreward ...

I was mainly a bar drinker...and woorked for many years in the
hopsitality industry. ..hotels/cocktail lounges.bars and restaurants.

The point of bars is to sell booze to turn a profit....Period.

The owners and servers are not thrilled to lose that stool/chair...the soft drinks
are over priced....the customers often loud and the stench unpleasant.
Regarless of how charming you think you are or how friendly the business
people appear.....they do make fun of non drinkers back of the house.

Why on earth would a non drinker want to sit around daily?
I sure

Re:Survived Bar

Thanks JohnBarleyCorn for your share.

Spending time with your brother at his 25th birthday party must have been special. You not only spent some quality time with your brother but did so without incident-way to go. Maintaining your sobriety was the first and foremost thought on your mind and you achieved that goal -so be proud of that. At least you had some sense about you, knowing -all along- what your purpose was for being there, and it did not involve drinking –like you said. I wish all of us can accomplish similar feats without worrying about the possible consequences; like "taking a drink" once again.

It must of felt awkward sitting at the bar stool without a drink in your hand. I too, have gone to parties where the drinks were flowing and had no such urges –like you did. I certainly wouldn't spend too much time in any non-sober environment that can trigger a relapse and would advise anyone who has a history of relapsing in similar settings, like bars, to do likewise. You can hold your head high, for now, knowing you lived another day without picking up a drink. I hope you had fun and we wish you many more enjoyable moments -one sober day at a time.

~God bless~

Congrats JBC!

I have hadto go to bars on a handful of occasions now And it can feel a little strange. I always check to see if they have any interesting non-alcoholic drinks at the bar. I had a "virgin smash" the other day...cucumber mint and lemon....it was. $8....I don't think the bar minded me being there....that had to be a pretty good profit in that drink and I tip pretty well at a bar when I don't drink

Fantastic job JBC, I avoided the bar at the wedding yesterday. I had to walk past it on the way to the toilet from our table and I couldn't even look in that direction.Meant for a cheap night as well.

I have found previously that if you can cross these hurdles it becomes easier the next time round. Its almost like re- chipping the brain I guess. Having done it once you know you can do it again type thing.

LF....
the profit is in the ammount of booze poured
and how quickly people drink the alcohol.

Bars run on profits from alcohol....non alcoholic
beverages are not counted in those per centages.
They are usually rung on separate keys.

It has zero to do with generous tipping...and of course you are charming.
You did make my point about over priced beverages.
