Several songs on the Mumford and Sons album, but "The Cave" most of all. A snippet:

So make your siren's call
And sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say

Because I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be

And I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

Hmmm. Can't get the YouTube video to embed, but here's the link:

I'm still really new at this, but the song that's helped me the most is Big Shot by Billy Joel. Not really inspirational in and of itself, but it reminds me of why I'm doing this. When I was drinking, I always thought I was the funniest, most charming person in the room. Big Shot reminds me that I was the only person who thought that.

There's one line that goes "you just don't remember all the things you said and you're not sure that you want to know. I'll give you one hint honey, you sure did put on a show." Definitely a fairly accurate representation of me.

Real Love by The Beatles (One of the 2 songs that Paul, George, and Ringo finished as one of Lennon's unfinished songs) It's awesome, and inspiring and every emotion haha, it's just great overall.

I Became Awake by The Great Lake Swimmers

I Became Awake lyrics
I became awake
From a very dark place
Patchwork of fear of poorly conceived ideas
With a blister of water

Mark of working hands, ready to catch or cut
Senses aligned, the animal urgency
And voices picked up
Flowing over the static, late, quiet

All awake, all awake

I became awake
Fingers are open, eyes they are open
The firing of images, an orchestra of scribbles
The guts of an engine, the veins of a leaf
Light onto paper, exposed

A filament in a bulb, up above or in the ground
Together we are magic, together we are dreaming
Together we will reach endlessly
The center of a seed, so full of possibilities

All awake, all awake
All awake

I became awake
I thought I was sleeping but I was only forming
A structure with no ceiling
With words like a runway
A cloud of a person drifting away

I was heavy but now I am light
I was heavy but now I am light
All awake, all awake
All awake, all awake

"Cleanse Song" by Bright Eyes. Someone suggested it on an SR thread similar to this one. I listened to it and had to buy it! It's great to listen to when you're getting ready in the morning.

I have changed my choice of preference- mellow easy listening radio station. Don't know why, maybe cos I was trying to tune the radio and this song was on that I wanted to listen to while scanning the stations, "House of the Rising Sun" by "The Animals", and left it there.
They play some carpe, there is alway a on/off switch, but 20 minutes later, turn it back on and another song I like is playing, Bill Haley, "Rock around the Clock", so for the sake of nostalgia, good listening, then another carpe song comes on.
Don't know how long this will last...

YouTube - Amy Grant - Better Than A Hallelujah

God loves a lulluby
In a mother's tears in the dead of night
Better than a Hallelujah sometimes

God loves the drunkard's cry
The soldier's plea not to let him die
Better than a Hallelujah sometimes

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful, the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

The woman holding on for life
The dying man giving up the fight
Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes

The tears of shame for what's been done
The silence when the words won't come
Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

Better than a church bell ringing
Better than a choir singing out, singing out

We pour out out miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful, the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful, the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

(Better than a Hallelujah sometimes)
Better than a Hallelujah
(Better than a Hallelujah sometimes)

This is a song about being at your bottom...and how God loves to hear it when you NEED Him.

My first post on this forum on my first day of my first step. I found this site as I was looking for songs about addiction and getting sober to make myself an 'encouragement playlist', and I have a few I'd like to share with y'all (yes I'm a Texan, hehe).

When I first heard this song, I was driving and had to pull over it hit me so hard. You can replace pills in this song with whatever your DoC happens to be.

This is a song by Tech N9ne and Kabosh. The line that really resonates with me most is "these little pills will change my mind, but they don't make it go away". When we sober up, our problems are right there waiting for us, and often they've gotten worse. Anyway, enjoy!

I'm not allowed to post links yet I guess, so look up "Kabosh - Little Pills" on youtube.

Try to break through, it's life or never, (it's like I'll never make it)
Or make it better (give me pills let me take it)
Can't change the weather (yeah),
And I'm going back to where I've been,
Hope somebody lets me in,
I need shelter,
From myself, if u can hear me please send help,

[Hook]
It's keeps raining in my mind,
Another storm another day,
These little pills won't change my mind,
Cuz they don't make it go away,
Keeps on raining in my head,
Another storm another day,
These little pills won't change my mind,
Cuz they don't make it go away,
(Keeps on raining)

It's Over.

[Verse]
Can only see myself is anybody here,
(I aint even myself no more)
If u could be myself you'd understand me clear,
(Can't pick myself up off the floor)
N if I died today it would take my pain away,
Cuz it flooded, (flooded)
N I'm drownin' (drownin')
Boy it's liberating me,

[Hook]

Lets find a way to run away from life,
Full of pain and strife,
Which direction I'm going I can't tell now,
Mister 7/20 nina tell me I'm hell bound,
The IRS is on my ass for the check that I didn't cash and the levey from child support felt like I fell down,
So I'm lookin' for extacy pills tech is the next to be thrilled seconds from method we I'll daily,
My brains cookin' the recipe will beckon the best of me killed sections of stepping I feel crazy,
Hit the club in the night with a lil bit of drug in my life and I'm sure lovin it real hypey I'm delivering,
With my seat out my site, seperated from my wife in the middle of a crisis I'm high shakin' and shiverin',
Rolling balls I'm elated I'm going dumb now drinking liquor I'm faded n havin fun now loaded gun and I'm tripping with everyone around keep me stuck in the sky I never wanna come down

Song number two: 3 Doors Down - Loser

Breathe in right away.
Nothing seems to fill this place.
I need this everytime
So take your lies, get off my case.
Someday I will find
A love that flows through me like this
This will fall away, this will fall away.

[Chorus]
You're getting closer
To pushing me off of life's little edge
'Cause I'm a loser
And sooner or later you know I'll be dead
You're getting closer
You're holding the rope and I'm taking the fall
'Cause I'm a loser, I'm a loser, yeah.

This is getting old.
I can't break these chains that I hold
My body's growing cold
There's nothing left of this mind or my soul.
Addiction needs a pacifier, the buzz of this poison is taking me hi

3rd and final song (for now): Jimmy Eat World - Pain

I don't feel the way I've ever felt
I know
I'm gonna smile and not get worried
I try but it shows

Anyone can make what I have built
And better now
Anyone can find the same white pills
It takes my pain away

It's a lie, a kiss with open eyes
And she's not breathing back
Anything but bother me
It takes my pain away
Never mind these are hurried times
Oh oh, I can't let it bother me

I never thought I'd walk away from you
I did
But it's a false sense of accomplishment
Every time I quit

Anyone can see my every flaw
It isn't hard
Anyone can say they're above this all
It takes my pain away

It's a lie, a kiss with open eyes
And she's not breathing back
Anything but bother me
It takes my pain away
Never mind these are hurried times
Oh oh, I can't let it bother me

I can't let it bother me

It takes my pain away

It's a lie, a kiss with open eyes
And she's not breathing back
Anything but bother me
It takes my pain away
Never mind these are hurried times
Oh oh, I can't let it bother me

It takes my pain
It takes my pain
It takes my pain
It takes my pain away
