Do you notice this stuff too?

Here's a question... Whenever I watch a movie or a TV show, I always make a mental note of the alcoholic beverages that are in the scene. I watched a movie the other day with a friend, Body of Lies, and I commented, "There is a lot of alcohol in this movie." My friend said, "Huh. I didn't notice." Then I realized I notice that in everything I'm watching... On Weeds, which I love, Nancy Botwin is always drinking wine, and it all seems so normal. Does anyone else pay attention to this?

Yes. Representation of alcohol in art is something I am always very conscious of. Sometimes it feels unfair, but I try not to make a big deal about it and just accept that it doesn't affect me the same way.

Yeah I just posted something about it in another thread. I'm way more aware of it now.

The shows I mentioned were Cougartown and Californication.

I forgot about old Otis! Funny thing is there was also at least one episode of Leave it to Beaver where Ward hired an alcoholic to paint their house, only to have Beaver accidently give the guy some booze from Ward's private stash.

I guess you're right you can't escape alcohol, and it's been on TV forever.

I love the one where the Beave climbs the billboard and falls into the coffee cup.
And The Darlings..Talented group of inebriated musicians. Someone had to have emptied the jug they blew into...

Yes but then most movies aren't real. Its an illusion when in movies people get trashed and nothing bad ever happens

For sure, I also REALLY notice adverts for it or when something is sponsored by it, I suppose I'm obsessed.

I never used to notice, now I notice it all the time.

As an amateur gourmet and 'foodie', fine wine is going to be the hardest thing for me to give up. I love a good Cab with dinner.

Yeah like the Hangover, Leaving Las Vegas and Animal House. Bad stuff happens they just find a way to beat it in 2 hours normally.

For some reason I imagine my alcoholic voice looks just like Bluto Blutarski in Animal House, and the day after he is always there saying, "You F***ed up....You trusted us!"

I guess that would make me Flounder.:O

Yes, I notice it all the time. I say to my husband it is a subtle form of brainwashing, which it most definitely is. There is also a thing called product placement which is used avidly in the advertising industry whereby massive companies use their products in programmes, films, etc using their clothes, products etc in the scene but are not actually advertising it. You are definitely right but we notice it more with alcohol whereas others dont but the whole process is there for a reason.....to make us buy their product.

I do that too - my favourite soap is 'Coronation Street' and they are always in the Rovers Return ordering drinks. It's quite annoying!

I

Hah! I immediately thought of Samantha on Bewitched for this post. She was always stirring up a huge pitcher of martinis when Derwood came home. Course we all know he had soooo much pressure from his job in advertising!

Me neither.

However, I counted the places one could buy liquor between my house and where one of my meetings is...depending on the route I take, it's either 11 or 12 establishments in 4.8 miles. That doesn't include restaurants or bars, just carry-out stores.
