No, More Alcohol, But Having Other Problems? please help.
hey every one. i'm in need of some advice. i know this may not relate solely to alcohol but every one is so nice here, and i'm really freaking out. first off let me start by saying, that i'm 2 days sober now. and i'm feeling pretty good about it, feeling stonger, that i can actually keep this up. i dumped out the rest of my alcohol. I've been so sick lately, and i'm so sick of it. i'm actually starting to feel a little better. anyway, about what's upsetting me. i had some blood work done at the doctors. and they said my thyroid level is a little low. now they made me an appointment for me in a few weeks to see a specialist. i guess i have post partum thyroidism. which happens to about 8 % of woman after they give birth. i read that about 75 % of woman's hormones will regulate on their own in a few months and go back to normal with no more problems, but about 30 % of woman it will never go away and they will always have problems with their thyroid and have to be on meds. i'm so scared. i've been sick, and can't loose any weight. what if this never goes away and i'll never be able to loose the weight. and i'll be ugly and fat. i know i'm sorry.i 'm really body conscious, and i can't stand to think i'll never be skinny again. i may have to get put on meds, and hopefully that would help my metabolism go back to normal. any woman out there ever have a problem with this after pregnancy and did it go away on its own. sorry, a little off topic, but i'm scared. i also, been going to the gym more lately, that's a nice natural high i really like. and started taking vitamins. i want to be healthier, and that means no more alcohol. i have to do it this time.
Big congrats and hugs on your two days sober! That's a great start to a better life. I don't know about the thyroid issues either, I'm afraid. I'd keep in contact with your doctor and write up a list of questions for him/her. Good job on staying sober. It does get better.

Thyroid problems may require meds...but once you get back
in balance...they usually are not needed.
Youre 21 and that is in your favor.
I'm glad you are getting this extra assistance....
Well done on not drinking and for useing the gym.
Again...your youth will make the weight go down faster
especially by eating healthy foods.

I had the thyroid thing postpartum as well. I took meds for awhile, but it eventually went away. You really should go get your level checked and get on meds if you need them.
As far as losing weight, just cutting out the empty calories in alcohol alone should help.

the Endocrinologist will answer all your questions much better than we can...you might be scaring yourself by reading too much on the web....it may be that your hormones are just taking longer to balance out too...you really DO need to stay off the alcohol to give yourself the best possible chance to even out naturally.
there are some big controversy about synthetic thyroid meds (Synthroid) vs. natural thyroid meds...(Armour) and what your doctor will prescribe for an underactive thryroid....you can google Mary Schoman? Shomon? for her website.
also, I agree with Anna, your age is in your favor, give yourself a chance to heal...your body just gave birth less than 2 months ago...plus you have been drinking heavily for an extended period....it is going to take time and care to repair yourself.
do remember that most women will lose a lot more hair after giving birth and it will grow back...I *think* this is because you lose less in normal shedding during pregnancy.
congrats on the 2 days, you sound like you had your call to reality this time.

I don't have the answer to your question. All I can suggest is that you don't get to far ahead of yourself. Just stay focused on what you need to do; staying away from the booze.
It is excellent that you are getting help and attention that you need. It is also excellent that you went two days without drinking! What a milestone!
However, don't worry yourself death. As you can see, you have some wonderful support who are pulling for you and will try to help you.

Hiya Pink, I remember your last thread and being worried as all get out about you. Seeing this thread has me so happy right now I'm doing back flips and smiling ear to ear. Why? Because of this quote...
Bloody awesome!! Do keep it up and do prepare for the trying times involved with keeping it up. Learn about cravings and methods for dealing with them, recognize the voice inside your head that says "ah come on Pinky, just the one drink" and then learn ways to ignore it - or tell it to f#$% off. It is SO worth it in the end! I'm so happy for you and your kids. Just awesome!!!!
As for your weight issues, a good amount of being overweight for people like us is the booze/empty calories (as someone else mentioned) After a few months without the "sauce" you'll start to notice that you can drop the weight quickly by working out. I'd take Julez offer if I were you (or try something like the P90X home workout stuff), and start getting in shape. The weight will fall off with your disciplined efforts, believe me. I dropped a massive bloated and fat stomach completely that was solely because of my drinking, and at 43 I have my 6 pack back! I still can't believe it (neither does my wife lol!!)
As for the issue with your thyroid, let your Doc know, get and take whatever meds are prescribed. My sister had thyroid problems, which caused her to be all kinds of irritable, all the time. Once she started on her medication everything regulated for her, including her mind. She was like a different person after being properly diagnosed and treated. Oh, and she also dropped weight after getting on her meds as well.
I'd suggest that you don't fall victim to "internet cowboy syndrome" and take everything you read online to heart, because there was a time when I became convinced I had cancer after reading about my symptoms on the internet. After a Doctor's visit it turned out to be the flu.
Congratulations on your commitment to yourself and to your family. Keep it together Pinkie, and I'll guarantee that you're in for the best years of your life!

Hi pink - Just wanted to mention that alcohol can cause a suppression of the thyroid., so you need to tell your doctor how much you've been drinking.
Do you take a good multi-vitamin? (Zinc seems to help with the thyroid). B vitamins are really good too, since alcohol also seems to deplete those.
Take care of yourself and don't let your mind start inventing scenarios, OK? Just focus on today and getting through it sober. Make a list of questions to ask your doctor, and again - be honest.
We're all wishing you the very best and I'm so proud of you for getting through 2 days. Things are going to get better so hang in there!

Hi Pink,
I agree with everyone who said do not let yourself get scared by reading too much medical advice on the internet. Don't get depressed by thinking about your thyroid now. You are doing a great job by not drinking---congrats! I'm sure it is hard, but keep at it, and keep posting.
I also agree with those who said to be honest with your doctor about the amount that you have been drinking. I was ashamed to confess to my doctor, but found that there was a lot of understanding and help once I came clean.

If you think thyroid problems can make you unattractive, have you ever seen an alcoholic woman in her 30s who looks like she's in her 60s? Bloated face, broken blood vessels, distended belly....
Any thyroid problems can be addressed in due course. See a doctor, don't try to diagnose yourself.
Congrats on day two--keep it up!

That's wonderful!!! I'm so glad to hear it. It may be sort of 'up and down' for a few weeks but I promise you it will get better. So glad to hear you're sober three days. You should be thru the worst of the withdrawals by now. Your emotions may be a little 'ragged' for a while but take good care of yourself, eat and sleep well and moderate exercise will get you back to good health.
You are ready, congratulations! Don't worry too much about the Thyroid. No Alcohol, a good diet and exercise will do so much to help your symptoms lessen. You will be OK, just follow whatever plan your doctor prescribes for you.
Keep up the good work.
